Job Description
We’re looking for a Hardware & Embedded Systems Engineer who enjoys turning ideas into physical, working products - from first schematic to production line.
If you enjoy board bring-up, firmware debugging, signal analysis, low-power optimisation, and seeing devices survive real-world abuse - you’ll feel at home here.
This is not a “hardware-only” or “firmware-only” role.
You’ll work across hardware design, embedded firmware, validation, industrial design collaboration, RF optimisation, and manufacturing - seeing your work through the full product lifecycle.
What You’ll Do
Hardware Development
-
Design and review schematics and multi-layer PCBs (KiCAD preferred)
-
Select and validate components for connectivity, sensing, and power systems
-
Develop and debug IoT hardware platforms using ESP32, STM32, or similar MCUs
-
Perform bench-level troubleshooting, signal analysis, and power characterisation using oscilloscopes, logic analysers, and spectrum analysers
-
Support RF, EMC, and compliance pre-certification activities
-
Own board bring-up and early hardware validation
You’ll take a design off the screen and turn it into a working, connected device.
Embedded Firmware Development
-
Develop production-grade embedded firmware in C/C++
-
Implement and debug peripheral drivers (SPI, I2C, UART, ADC, etc.)
-
Work with RTOS-based systems (e.g. FreeRTOS)
-
Integrate wireless and wired interfaces (Wi-Fi, BLE, LTE, RS485, MQTT)
-
Support low-level debugging during bring-up and field issue investigation
You’ll be as comfortable in a debugger as you are with a scope.
Product Development & Industrial Collaboration
-
Work closely with Industrial Design from early concept stage through to production
-
Influence enclosure design, internal architecture, antenna placement, thermals, and ingress protection
-
Balance aesthetics, RF performance, reliability, and manufacturability
-
Help shape not just the PCB - but the entire product
You won’t just design a board. You’ll help craft the device.
Prototype & Validation Engineering
-
Develop structured validation and characterisation plans
-
Perform reliability, power-performance, environmental, and RF testing
-
Conduct root-cause analysis of hardware and firmware issues
-
Improve robustness and repeatability of prototype designs
We value engineers who ask “why did that happen?” and won’t stop until they know.
Test & Manufacturing Support
-
Design and develop production test fixtures and validation jigs
-
Develop test automation tools (Python, C#, or embedded test firmware)
-
Contribute to DFM and DFT decisions during hardware design
-
Work with manufacturing partners to ensure scalable, testable production
You’ll help ensure what we design can actually ship - reliably and at scale.
Requirements
What We’re Looking For:
-
BSc, BEng, BTech, or equivalent in Electronic, Electrical, or Mechatronic Engineering
-
4–8 years of experience in hardware and embedded systems development
-
Proven contribution to commercially deployed IoT or connected hardware products
-
Strong schematic and PCB design experience
-
Solid embedded C/C++ proficiency (bare-metal and/or RTOS-based systems)
-
Hands-on experience with lab equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analysers, power measurement tools, spectrum analysers)
-
Strong understanding of analog, digital, RF, and power electronics fundamentals
-
Experience supporting or developing production test systems
-
Comfortable working across hardware, firmware, and manufacturing domains
-
Experience with Git and collaborative engineering workflows
Bonus Points For
-
Experience with ESP32, STM32, or similar MCU platforms
-
Low-power and battery-operated system design
-
Antenna design and impedance matching experience
-
RF validation, wireless certification, or EMC pre-compliance testing
-
Experience with LTE, Sigfox, LoRa, or other IoT connectivity technologies
-
Python-based test automation
-
Familiarity with DFM/DFT and small-to-medium scale manufacturing
-
Mechanical prototyping or 3D CAD experience
Benefits
-
Exciting Workspace.
-
Cutting-Edge Technology.
-
Engaging Projects and Innovations.
-
High-Tech Atmosphere.
-
Versatile Experience - Get exposure to a wide range of things.
-
Involvement in Manufacturing Processes - End-to-End Involvement.
-
Inspiring Work Environment.
-
Opportunity for Career Growth and Continuous Learning - Cross-Functional Teams.
-
Contributing to a South African Company with a real impact on people's lives.
-
Olarm Device and Subscription.
Are you ready to embark on a journey that's both professionally fulfilling and personally rewarding? If you're excited about technology, driven by results, and thrive in a collaborative environment, Olarm is the place for you. Join us in shaping the future of smart security solutions!
