About the Role

Embdes Engineering Solutions is looking for an experienced Embedded Linux Engineer with strong expertise in Yocto Project , Linux BSP development , and NXP i.MX6 platforms .

The ideal candidate will be responsible for optimizing and maintaining a Yocto-based Board Support Package (BSP) running on the TechNexion PICO-IMX6 DualLite (NXP i.MX6) platform. The board is already operational on Yocto Zeus , and the primary focus of this role is on BSP maintenance, Linux kernel updates, boot-time optimization, Bluetooth stack enhancements, and migration planning to newer Yocto LTS releases.

Key Responsibilities

Yocto BSP Development & Maintenance

• Maintain, enhance, and support the existing Yocto BSP for the TechNexion PICO-IMX6 DualLite platform.
• Develop and maintain Yocto recipes, layers, and bbappend files.
• Ensure proper Yocto layer organization, maintainability, and documentation.
• Troubleshoot BitBake build issues and optimize build workflows.
• Perform feasibility assessment and migration planning from Yocto Zeus to newer LTS releases such as Dunfell or Kirkstone .

Linux Kernel & BSP Optimization

• Integrate the latest stable Linux kernel patches from NXP and upstream Linux where applicable.
• Configure, customize, and optimize Linux kernel settings.
• Maintain kernel configuration (defconfig) and remove unnecessary components.
• Manage kernel patch integration and long-term BSP stability.
• Perform cross-compilation and toolchain management.

Boot Time Optimization

• Analyze and optimize Linux boot performance.
• Profile boot time using Linux performance analysis tools.
• Optimize system startup sequence using systemd .
• Remove unnecessary startup services, daemons, and packages.
• Improve overall system responsiveness and startup performance.

Bluetooth Stack Development

• Update and maintain the BlueZ Bluetooth stack .
• Integrate firmware updates and Bluetooth patches.
• Debug Bluetooth bring-up and connectivity issues.
• Ensure long-term stability and compatibility of Bluetooth functionality.

System Performance Optimization

• Optimize CPU utilization, memory usage, and I/O performance.
• Tune CPU governors for improved power efficiency.
• Perform performance profiling and bottleneck analysis.
• Improve system reliability and runtime efficiency.

Storage & System Architecture

• Define and maintain storage partition layouts for eMMC and SD storage.
• Manage:
• Boot partitions
• Root filesystem
• Data partitions
• Log partitions
• Update slots (where applicable)
• Ensure storage layout supports maintainability and future OTA requirements.

Documentation & Release Support

• Maintain comprehensive documentation for:
• Yocto build environment
• BSP architecture
• Layer organization
• Build procedures
• Kernel configuration
• Support long-term maintenance and release activities.
• Collaborate with hardware and software teams to resolve platform issues.

Mandatory Skills

• 5+ years of Embedded Linux development experience.
• Minimum 2+ years of hands-on experience with the Yocto Project .
• Strong expertise in:

• Hands-on experience with NXP i.MX6 platforms.
• Strong Linux kernel configuration and patching experience.
• Experience with BSP development and maintenance.

Preferred Skills

• Experience migrating Yocto versions (Zeus → Dunfell/Kirkstone).
• U-Boot customization and bootloader optimization.
• Embedded Linux power optimization.
• CPU governor tuning.
• Understanding of Secure Boot.
• Knowledge of OTA update mechanisms.
• Exposure to Qt-based embedded applications.
• Familiarity with eMMC and SD storage architecture.

Expected Deliverables

• Define and maintain storage layouts for eMMC/SD including boot, rootfs, data, logs, and update partitions.
• Achieve measurable Linux boot-time improvements through profiling and optimization.
• Remove redundant services, daemons, and packages to reduce system footprint.
• Deliver a stable Bluetooth stack with the latest BlueZ updates and patches.
• Integrate critical Linux kernel fixes and maintain kernel stability.
• Produce comprehensive documentation for Yocto layers, BSP, and build processes.
• Prepare a migration assessment and implementation plan for upgrading from Yocto Zeus to a newer Yocto LTS release.
