We are looking for a highly skilled Senior Embedded Engineer with strong experience in IoT and connected devices to join Higain Labs. If you have proven track record of developing embedded systems from concept to deployment, we'd love to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities:
Firmware Development:
-
Architect, write, and maintain production firmware in C and embedded C++ for connected devices.
-
Design and build RTOS-based applications (FreeRTOS, Zephyr) and bare-metal systems where appropriate.
-
Develop and optimize device drivers for sensors, radios, and peripherals.
-
Own memory, power, and performance optimization for battery-constrained and always-on devices.
Connectivity & Wireless:
-
Implement and integrate wireless stacks such as BLE, Wi-Fi, LoRa/LoRaWAN, Thread, Zigbee, or cellular (LTE-M/NB-IoT).
-
Build reliable networking layers (MQTT, CoAP, TLS) for device-to-cloud communication.
-
Handle intermittent connectivity, reconnection logic, and data buffering.
-
Optimize radio usage and duty cycling for power efficiency.
OTA & Device Lifecycle:
-
Design and implement secure OTA (over-the-air) firmware update mechanisms with rollback.
-
Manage device provisioning, onboarding, and fleet management workflows.
-
Implement telemetry, remote diagnostics, and logging.
Security:
-
Implement secure boot, encrypted storage, and hardware root of trust (secure elements, TPM).
-
Manage key provisioning, certificate handling, and mutual authentication.
-
Apply secure coding practices and mitigate common IoT attack surfaces.
Hardware Bring-up & Debugging:
-
Lead board bring-up and validation against schematics and datasheets.
-
Debug with JTAG/SWD (J-Link, ST-Link), GDB, logic analyzers, and oscilloscopes.
-
Diagnose RF, power, and timing issues on real hardware.
System Design & Leadership:
-
Translate product requirements into technical architecture and specifications.
-
Select MCUs, radios, sensors, and cloud integration approaches.
-
Set coding standards, review code, and mentor junior engineers.
-
Drive design reviews and technical decision-making across the team.
Cloud & Integration:
-
Integrate devices with IoT cloud platforms (AWS IoT, Azure IoT Hub, GCP IoT).
-
Define device-side data models, message schemas, and API contracts.
-
Collaborate with backend and app teams on end-to-end system behavior.
Toolchain & Process:
-
Manage cross-compilation toolchains, build systems (CMake, Yocto, Buildroot), and CI for firmware.
-
Maintain version control (Git), automated testing, and hardware-in-the-loop pipelines.
-
Interpret linker scripts and map files; profile and instrument firmware.
Collaboration & Lifecycle:
-
Work cross-functionally with hardware, cloud, mobile, QA, and product teams.
-
Support manufacturing (production test, provisioning at scale) and field deployment.
-
Own firmware quality, reliability, and maintainability across the product lifecycle.
Required Qualifications:
-
5+ years of professional embedded firmware development experience.
-
Expert-level C and strong embedded C++ for resource-constrained systems.
-
Proven experience shipping RTOS-based firmware (FreeRTOS, Zephyr, or similar).
-
Hands-on experience with at least one wireless technology (BLE, Wi-Fi, LoRa, Thread, Zigbee, or cellular).
-
Solid understanding of communication protocols (UART, SPI, I2C) and networking (MQTT/CoAP, TLS).
-
Experience with secure boot, OTA updates, and embedded security fundamentals.
-
Proficiency with hardware debugging tools: JTAG/SWD, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes.
-
Ability to read datasheets and schematics and reason about MCU peripherals.
-
Degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent practical experience.
Nice to Have:
-
Experience with IoT cloud platforms (AWS IoT, Azure IoT Hub, GCP).
-
Familiarity with embedded Linux (device drivers, device tree, Yocto/Buildroot).
-
Exposure to low-power design, RF layout awareness, or antenna tuning.
-
Experience scaling device provisioning and fleet management in production.
-
Contributions to open-source embedded projects or wireless stacks.
-
Familiarity with functional safety or security certifications relevant to IoT.
