Job Description

Consulting Engagement: USB & Serial Communications / Windows Platform Stability

About the Engagement:

We operate a large fleet of automated kiosks running Windows in unattended, high-uptime environments. Persistent communications failures across USB and serial-connected subsystems are requiring frequent reboots to restore normal operation. We’re seeking an experienced embedded systems / Windows platform consultant to independently investigate root causes and recommend durable solutions.

Scope of Work:

- Audit USB and serial (RS-232/RS-485) signal integrity on kiosk hardware — voltage margins, cable/connector quality, EMI/noise susceptibility

- Analyze Windows USB host controller behavior, driver stack stability, and COM port enumeration under extended uptime

- Review Windows Event Logs, USBView/USBDeview data, and any existing diagnostic captures

- Identify root causes of device disconnects, enumeration failures, and conditions requiring reboot

- Deliver a written findings report with prioritized recommendations (hardware, driver/firmware, OS configuration)

Ideal Background:

- 5+ years in embedded systems or hardware engineering with a focus on USB and serial communications

- Hands-on experience with protocol analyzers (Total Phase Beagle, Ellisys, or equivalent)

- Deep familiarity with Windows driver stack, USB host controllers, and COM port management

- Experience with unattended / kiosk / retail automation hardware a strong plus

- Ability to work on-site at our facility in San Diego, CA
