Job profile:
To work within the Volution Ventilation Group Technical Team as a
Firmware Design Engineer
, reporting to the Technical Manager - Controls, to design, develop & review firmware for embedded ventilation control systems, including fault-finding of controls & firmware and participating in firmware architecture and technical design activities.
As a Firmware Design Engineer, your responsibilities will include:

To work in a small team environment. Work closely with electronics, mechanical, test, product management and manufacturing teams to ensure successful product delivery.

Write, update and review detailed product design, firmware specification and system test documents to ensure all requirements are met, throughout the whole product life cycle.

Ability to communicate concepts, unit and system level designs, design validation test results and progress of projects to core team & leadership.

Contribute to continuous improvement of coding standards, development processes and tools.

To plan, monitor, and control workload and progress, ensuring deliverables are achieved against agreed timescales.

Comfortable working with ambiguity and solving complex technical problems.

Ability to prioritize key tasks effectively and demonstrate a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
To be successful in this role you will need:
-
Proven track record in embedded C/C++ firmware development for electronic products, across a broad range of commercial market sectors including direct involvement with the full product development lifecycle from concept to production release.

Degree qualified in Electronic / Software / Computer Engineering or related subjects or equivalent experience.
-
Minimum 5 years of industry experience in embedded systems.

Experience developing for resource-constrained embedded systems (8 to 32bit) using both bare-metal and RTOS environments. Knowledge of ARM Cortex M, PIC & and ESP32 MCUs would be advantageous.

Experience of digital communication & signaling methods, ideally including RS485, Modbus RTU, SPI, I2C, PWM, ADC. Knowledge of IoT (TCP/UDP/IP, MQTT) and Sub-GHz RF.

Experience of commissioning and debugging prototype / newly developed hardware & embedded platforms, including use of hardware tools such as oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.

Experience of devising high-performance, cost-effective, optimized firmware architectures, including modularity / layered techniques, maximizing opportunity for code re-use.

Ability to write comprehensive technical design documentation.

Strong written, and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
Desirable skills and experience, but not essential:

Low-power firmware techniques.
-
Understanding of secure firmware development principles, including secure boot, firmware update mechanisms and product cybersecurity considerations.

Python or scripting for test automation.
