Job Description

About KARL STORZ

From the operating room to surgery centers—and everywhere in between—KARL STORZ North America is a global leader in medical technology and advanced visualization solutions. We design specialty innovations, smart instruments and devices, integrated ecosystems, and intelligent imaging—to build a more connected, software-enabled operating room.

As an independent, family-owned MedTech company, we ambitiously think in generations instead of quarters to improve patients' lives around the world.

About The Role

We are seeking an experienced FPGA Design Engineer III to join our engineering team developing next-generation medical video camera systems. In this role, you will design, develop, verify, and integrate FPGA-based imaging solutions while contributing to system architecture across FPGA, embedded processors, GPU/edge computing, and AI-enabled image processing. You'll play a key role in advancing our imaging technologies while helping improve FPGA development processes and providing technical leadership across cross-functional engineering teams.

What You'll Do

  • Design, develop, test, integrate, and verify FPGA-based imaging solutions for advanced medical video camera systems.
  • Develop synthesizable Verilog/SystemVerilog HDL code for FPGA implementations.
  • Create simulation and verification environments using Verilog/SystemVerilog.
  • Analyze, decompose, and refine FPGA and system requirements while contributing to overall system architecture.
  • Lead FPGA architecture improvements and development process enhancements across engineering teams.
  • Evaluate and select FPGA devices and supporting components that meet system performance requirements.
  • Troubleshoot FPGA designs and resolve hardware/software integration issues.
  • Analyze FPGA resource utilization, power consumption, timing, and overall system performance.
  • Utilize approved AI-assisted development tools to improve code quality, verification, documentation, debugging efficiency, and engineering productivity while maintaining compliance with company policies, quality standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with hardware, embedded software, systems, and image processing engineers throughout the product development lifecycle.

What You'll Bring

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of FPGA design experience with a Bachelor's degree, or 3+ years with a Master's degree.
  • Strong experience developing synthesizable Verilog/SystemVerilog HDL.
  • Experience creating simulation and verification environments for FPGA designs.
  • Advanced troubleshooting skills across FPGA, hardware, and embedded software environments.
  • Experience architecting FPGA designs to meet complex system requirements.
  • Understanding of FPGA architectures and FPGA development toolchains.
  • Experience improving FPGA design methodologies and engineering processes.
  • Strong technical writing skills with the ability to create clear requirements, design documentation, and technical analyses.
  • Experience leveraging AI-assisted engineering tools to improve development efficiency and quality.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field.
  • 8+ years of FPGA design experience with a Bachelor's degree, or 6+ years with a Master's degree.
  • Experience with GPU programming, AI inference deployment, edge computing platforms, AMD Versal AI Engines, NVIDIA Jetson/Orin platforms, or similar accelerated computing technologies.
  • Experience developing embedded software for microcontrollers interfacing with FPGAs.
  • Strong knowledge of video timing and interface standards.
  • Experience working within regulated medical device environments, including FDA Quality System Regulation (21 CFR Part 820), ISO 13485, and ISO 9001.
  • Experience providing technical leadership, mentoring engineers, and driving engineering best practices.

What You'll Need to Succeed

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to solve complex technical challenges.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced engineering environment.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills across multidisciplinary teams.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to engineering excellence.
  • Ability to maintain productive working relationships built on respect, collaboration, and accountability..
