Automation & Robotics Engineer Intern

As an Automation & Robotics Engineer Intern at Forgis, you will join the Engineering team that turns disconnected machines into a unified, controllable system. You will work hands-on with cutting-edge automation and robotics technology, helping bring real production lines onto the Forgis platform and making them talk to each other.


Responsibilities

  • Integrating: Connecting PLCs, robots, and vendor equipment onto our platform across protocols (OPC UA, Modbus, Profinet), validating the data flows, and confirming the platform controls them reliably.
  • Deploying: Developing and deploying integrations on real robotic and automation systems, with rapid prototyping, strong coding, and a solid grasp of mechanical and automation systems.
  • Debugging: Working on real hardware to find the root cause across software, network, and machine layers when a line does not behave as expected.
  • Building: Creating reusable connectors and tooling so the next integration takes days instead of weeks.
  • Improving: Feeding product feedback from integrations, users, and the community back into the roadmap.


This role is ideal for you if

  • You are currently pursuing a BSc or MSc at a top university (e.g. ETH, TUM, Oxford, Cambridge, PoliMi, IIT, NUST) in robotics, mechatronics, controls, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field, with a scientific, structured approach to problem-solving.
  • You have hands-on coding experience in Python and/or C++, and can write clean, reliable code that talks to real hardware.
  • You have worked with industrial control systems (PLCs) and are familiar with industrial protocols such as OPC UA, Modbus, Profinet, or EtherCAT, whether through coursework, projects, or internships.
  • You know about automation fundamentals: kinematics, sensors and actuators, motion control.
  • You can debug across the full stack, from software and networking down to the machine, and you enjoy getting your hands dirty on the plant floor.
  • You take initiative in fast-paced environments, learn new systems quickly, and communicate clearly across engineering and external teams.
