What To Expect
Tesla’s Robotics Software Engineering team is responsible for the design and development of robotic controls and fleet management systems for Tesla’s manufacturing, material flow, and logistic use cases. This includes the management of AMRs (Autonomous Mobile Robots), ASRSs (Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems), conveyor systems, and the potential usage of Optimus on the factory floor.
We are seeking a software engineer to have strong experience in robotic kinematics/dynamics modeling, motion control algorithm design (including classical and model-based approaches), and hands-on deployment in real-world projects, who will be responsible for designing, implementing, and optimizing motion control systems for autonomous and industrial robots., as well as address sustaining engineering needs. This role requires sitting onsite full time in Austin, TX, and frequent travel to Tesla factories worldwide.
What You'll Do
Develop motion control strategies for various industrial robotic platforms, including wheeled mobile robots and industrial material handler platform
Design and implement controllers such as PID, MPC, LQR, and trajectory generation algorithms using simulation tools or custom C++/Python code
Contribute to system debugging, parameter tuning, and continuous performance improvement
Collaborate with perception, planning, and software integration teams to achieve system-level performance goals
Contribute to and take ownership of the end-to-end design and implementation of features from early prototype to production release
What You'll Bring
Degree in Control Engineering, Robotics, Automation, or a related field
3+ years of experience in robotic motion control or closely related domains
Strong theoretical foundation in control systems, mobile robotics, and optimization
Practical experience in robot dynamics modeling, system identification, and real-time control implementation; involvement in commercial or research projects with autonomous navigation or industrial robots is preferred
Proven track record of improving system accuracy, robustness, or efficiency
Comfortable working in fast-paced, iterative development environments using Git and standard CI tools, with emphasis on documentation and testing standards
Experience developing real-time, multithreaded C/C++ software on Linux platforms; familiarity with RTPreempt and kernel configuration is a plus
Effective communicator with the ability to collaborate across cross-functional teams
Willingness to travel up to 20%
