What To Expect
Tesla’s Robotics Software Engineering team designs and develops robotic controls and fleet management systems for manufacturing, material flow, and logistics use cases. This includes managing Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs), Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (ASRSs), and conveyor systems. We are seeking a software engineer to drive new features and improvements for both onboard robot controllers and server-side fleet management systems, while also addressing sustaining engineering needs. The team operates in Fremont, CA, and Austin, TX, with up to 15% travel to Tesla factories worldwide for onsite support during project launches. This position will be located in Austin, TX.
What You'll Do
Responsible for developing, maintaining, and improving algorithms and models associated with perception, navigation, safety, and fleet management of autonomous mobile robots
Path planning: Vehicle kinematics and Motion Controls; Model predictive control and dynamics-based trajectory optimization
Perception: State estimation, Mapping & Localization using SLAM; Obstacle detection and avoidance; Precision Docking; Object tracking
Contribute to and take ownership of the end-to-end design and implementation of features from early prototype to production release
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather feedback and identify areas for improvement, planning them within the engineering design cycle iterations
Support ongoing projects in production by identifying, debugging, and resolving issues to ensure service uptime
What You'll Bring
Degree in Computer Science, Robotics or a related field, or equivalent industry experience
2+ years of proven experience in industrial robotics controls systems, particularly with algorithms related to state estimation, perception, localization, navigation, and path planning for autonomous mobile robots
Experience developing and debugging real-time, multithreaded software systems using C/C++ on Linux based platforms (Familiarity with RTPreempt and Linux kernel configuration is a plus)
Familiarity with sensor technologies such as LIDAR, IMU, cameras, depth sensors, and their integration in robotics applications
Familiarity with functional safety standards is a plus
Ability to adapt to fast-paced, iterative development cycles in a dynamic environment, using standard CI tools like Git while following rigorous documentation and testing standards
Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work on complex technical challenges
Effective communication skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams
