Job Description

About HIVE

HIVE Robots is building the software that makes humanoid robots reliable enough to do real work alongside people. We don't manufacture robots but buy them from leading hardware vendors (today that means Neura and Unitree, with more platforms coming) and build the control, perception and learning layer that turns a capable machine into one a customer can actually rely on.

Role Overview

This is where much of that comes together. You take a vendor's robot, where much of the low-level control loop is a closed system you talk to over an SDK, and you make it behave. That means tuning the control layer above it, keeping latency and calibration honest across the whole stack, and working out from a log to diagnose and root-cause issues. It is hands-on, hardware-grounded work, and it is forming the part of the stack the rest of the team depends on.

What You'd Work On

  • The control layer above the vendor's SDK: gains, command shaping, action rates, and various learned and non-learned controllers that sit on top
  • Reliability of the foundation: calibration, sensor integrity, time synchronisation across our compute hosts, monitoring and instrumentation
  • Latency across the full stack, from the SDK boundary through our own compute to the teleoperation link
  • Debugging from first principles using log data and system ID methods
  • Bringing reinforcement and imitation-learning policies onto the robot, on top of a deterministic, auditable safety layer
  • Keeping our control and teleoperation code portable, so it moves to the next robot platform rather than being rebuilt for it

What We're Looking For

  • Five years or more taking a real robotic or embedded system from prototype to something that holds up in a messy environment, not just in a demo
  • A solid grounding in classical control theory and rigid-body dynamics
  • Real experience tuning controllers and debugging electromechanical systems on physical hardware
  • Strong C++ and Python, and comfort working in real-time, Linux-based systems
  • Experience with calibration, sensor integration, time-sync, monitoring, CI
  • Someone who leaves the people and code around them better off, not just their own corner of it

Nice to Have

  • Experience with humanoid or legged robots
  • Reinforcement or imitation learning used as a control tool, with sim-to-real experience (MuJoCo, Isaac Sim). This is a role for someone who ships learned policies reliably, not one for open-ended model research
  • Teleoperation, motion retargeting, or VR/AR robot control
  • Experience working against a vendor SDK on hardware you don't own
  • Any exposure to the safety or certification side of industrial robotics

Working at HIVE

We're a small, hands-on team in Kgs Lyngby, 15 min train ride from Copenhagen centre, Denmark. The work is driven by creating value for near-term deployment. You'd take real responsibility for a layer of the stack, end to end, and you'd have a real say in how it gets built.

We welcome applicants from across Europe and further afield. If a move is on the table, we're glad to talk through what relocating to Denmark would look like.

How to Apply

Send a short note about what you've built to [email protected]. We'd especially like to hear about a system you took from flaky to genuinely reliable, how you got there, and who you did it with.
