JOB SUMMARY:
This role will be a key contributor to the development of complex embedded systems. Leading firmware design efforts, this role will mentor junior engineers, participate in system-level architecture decisions, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality products. This role demands a deep understanding of firmware development, extensive experience in coding and debugging, and the ability to provide technical leadership within the organization. This role is expected to be on-site in the Cincinnati or Versailles, Ohio location 4 days a week. This is not a remote position.
ESSENTIAL/PRIMARY DUTIES:
- Provides technical guidance for system-level decisions.
- Conducts thorough code reviews to ensure quality and adherence to coding standards.
- Optimizes firmware for performance, power efficiency, and memory usage.
- Drives the design of firmware architecture particularly in systems using Real Time Operating Systems.
- Drives innovation in firmware development processes and methodologies.
- Collaborates with leadership and other cross functional departments to align decisions with organizational goals.
- Leads design of complex systems, researches and proposes innovative solutions.
- Formulates solutions to complex and ambiguous problems that are not well defined. Incorporates feedback and solutions from others.
- Acts as a Technical Lead, manages significant systems, uses strategic planning, and mitigates risk.

Communicates complex technical ideas through daily work, presentations, and workshops. Fosters cross team communication and knowledge sharing. Collaborates with teams and management to make critical technical decisions that align with organizational goals.

Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer science, software engineering or related field and 6+ years of experience, or equivalent combination of both.
COMPETENCY and/or SKILL:
- In-depth knowledge of various microcontroller and microprocessor architectures
- Understanding of real-time operating systems
- Experience in designing firmware architecture for complex systems
- Proficiency in languages such as C and C++ for embedded systems. Experience with scripting languages (e.g., Python) for automation and testing
- Ability to integrate firmware with broader system architectures
- Ability to lead the design of complex, interconnected systems and shape the organization's technical direction
- Ability to effectively communicate technical strategies and decisions to executives
- Ability to establish and enforce quality standards that align with industry best practices and regulatory requirements

- Provides leadership, coaching, and/or mentoring to level II and level III engineers.

What we're looking for
At embedd.it, we power hardware-software integration in embedded devices. We turn fragmented semiconductor chip data into configurable digital twins, then deterministically generate code, tests, and documentation – making integration faster, cheaper, and resilient to supply chain shocks.
We’re looking for a true legend – someone with abstract thinking and deep expertise in low-level software development. You’ll build vendor-agnostic tooling for MCU and peripheral integration to solve hardware-software integration once and for all. We work at the intersection of embedded systems, code generation, compilers, and machine learning. It’s your chance to help redefine how low-level development is done.
Responsibilities
- Drive the architecture of the driver structures and system layout
- Define scalable patterns for cross-architectural integration across bare-metal, Zephyr, Linux, and other environments
- Deconstruct complex SoC device trees and translate hardware descriptions into structured internal models for automated reasoning
- Partner with the ML team to shape data and annotation models for AI-driven data-extraction tooling
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in embedded systems development, including bare-metal and RTOS-based systems
- Proficiency in C/C++
- Familiarity with firmware configuration, SoC bring-up, and system-level debugging
- Hands-on experience with code generation tools, or low-level compiler/decompiler/emulator technologies
- Strong background in embedded toolchains: compilers, linkers, debuggers, and build systems
- Python or scripting for automation and tooling is a plus
- Experience with functional-safety standards is a plus
