Senior Software Engineer — 3D Print Farm Operations
Permanent / Full-time
On-site — San Francisco, CA
$200,000 – $250,000
About the Client
A venture-backed US healthtech company that designs and manufactures custom medical devices at scale, combining AI with in-house automated 3D-printing production. They're already live with some of the largest national healthcare providers and trusted by major US employers to protect their on-the-feet workforces.
Role Overview
This is the engineering role that owns the software running the physical production floor - the layer where backend services meet the printers themselves. You'll sit between a distributed engineering team and the production operation in San Francisco, owning the systems that keep the print farm running at scale. It's a hands-on, on-site role: you're with the hardware every day, shipping improvements that directly change how many devices get produced, how reliably, and how fast the team can react when something goes wrong.
Responsibilities
-
Own and develop the systems that handle printer queue orchestration, job dispatch and fleet-wide monitoring across the print farm
-
Build automation that cuts manual operational work and lifts throughput and reliability
-
Instrument the hardware to push real-time data — failures, throughput, utilisation — into dashboards and alerting pipelines
-
Work with the distributed engineering team to turn floor requirements into well-architected backend services and APIs
-
Act as the on-site technical lead for production-floor initiatives, from scoping through to delivery
-
Find and remove failure points across the full path from print job creation to finished product
Required Skills and Experience
-
Hands-on experience writing software that talks to physical hardware, with a real understanding of what that involves in practice
-
Comfortable with hardware communication protocols - USB, serial, REST/HTTP APIs or vendor SDKs and debugging at the hardware/software boundary
-
Strong TypeScript and Node.js, with experience building and maintaining production backend services
-
Working knowledge of AWS - enough to design systems that bridge on-prem hardware with cloud services
-
Comfortable on a production floor: someone who can translate messy operational problems into clean software and communicate fluently in both directions
Nice to Have
-
Experience building monitoring, alerting or automation tooling in a manufacturing or operational environment
