Job Description

We are hiring for Principal Scientist: Quantum Transducers

In this role of Principal Scientist for Quantum transducers based on optomechanical systems, you will directly report to the CEO and lead research and development of microwave-to-optics transducer technology for optical signal delivery systems for high fidelity qubit control. This is a founding-team-level technical role. You will set the direction for one of the most consequential open problems in quantum hardware, recruit and mentor a team of scientists and engineers.

What you will do

  • Define and drive the transducer R&D roadmap - device architecture, target specs, and milestone planning.
  • Design and characterize electro-optomechanical and electro-optical transducer devices; lead cavity QED and optomechanics experiments.
  • Develop microwave photon to optical photon conversion protocols optimised for low added noise and high conversion efficiency.
  • Integrate transducer modules with dilution refrigerator setups and superconducting qubit control stacks.
  • Collaborate with the hardware teams on optical signal delivery - waveguides, fibres, free-space coupling - to minimise loss in the full signal chain.
  • Publish, patent, and represent QpiAI at leading quantum hardware conferences.
  • Hire, mentor, and technically lead a team of 3-8 PhD scientists and engineers.

What we are looking for

  • PhD in physics, applied physics, electrical engineering, or closely related field.
  • Deep expertise in at least one transducer modality: electro-optomechanics, piezo-optomechanics, electro-optic (e.g. LN), or magnon-based approaches.
  • Hands-on experience with dilution refrigerators and cryogenic microwave engineering.
  • Proficiency in quantum optics and microwave circuit QED - theory and experiment.
  • Track record of device design, nanofabrication, and low-noise measurement at the quantum level.
  • Experience integrating photonic components (fibre coupling, free-space optics, on-chip waveguides).
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multi-disciplinary research programs.
  • Strong publication record in top-tier journals is plus.
  • Executive presence with good problem-solving and communication skills.
