Principal Embedded Software Engineer – Firmware Security (Remote)
We’re seeking a highly experienced engineer to architect, implement, and validate platform control unit (PCU) firmware for safety-critical avionics applications. This role focuses on processing solutions used across commercial and military products, with deep involvement in secure boot, hardware root of trust, bootloader development, and low-level platform bring-up.
What You’ll Do
-
Define the architecture, requirements, and technical roadmap for PCU firmware and low-level platform software
-
Lead the design and implementation of secure boot, hardware root of trust, key provisioning, and platform trust mechanisms
-
Guide bring-up efforts for processing platforms, including bootloader initialization, BSP development, driver bring-up, and hardware validation
-
Provide technical leadership to embedded software, security, and hardware interface engineers
-
Partner with hardware teams on processor initialization flows, power management states, and silicon interaction models
-
Participate in threat modeling, security reviews, and architectural risk assessments for platform boot and control paths
-
Drive debugging and root-cause analysis of complex hardware/software interactions
-
Oversee integration of PCU firmware with system software, OS, and higher-level platform components
-
Establish coding standards, design best practices, and documentation for platform and security software
-
Serve as a technical point of contact for internal and external partners and vendors
What You Bring
-
10+ years of experience in embedded systems, firmware development, and low-level platform software
-
Strong knowledge of secure boot design, bootloader architecture, cryptographic trust models, and hardware security modules
-
Hands-on experience with board bring-up, processor initialization, and debugging tools such as JTAG, logic analyzers, and oscilloscopes
-
Strong proficiency in C/C++ and low-level programming, including register-level work
-
Deep understanding of processor architectures, SoC subsystems, memory interfaces, and hardware abstraction layers
-
Experience leading engineering teams and driving complex, multidisciplinary work
-
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Nice to Have
-
Experience with ARM TrustZone, TPM, TEE, or similar secure processing technologies
-
Linux kernel or RTOS bring-up experience; familiarity with U-Boot or custom bootloaders
-
Security certification, compliance, or platform hardening experience
-
Background in safety-critical or mission-critical embedded systems
