PCB Layout – Senior Engineer

We’re looking for an experienced Senior PCB Layout Engineer with 5–10 years of experience to support development of industrial, fire-safety, fire-suppression, power-electronics, embedded control, communication, and connected-device products. The role is centered on Altium Designer based PCB layout ownership for production-grade boards used in high-reliability and safety-critical environments.

This engineer should be strong in practical PCB layout execution across mixed-signal electronics, industrial interfaces, wired communication, RF modules, high-current power distribution, and offline AC supply/high-voltage sections. Experience with AC-DC SMPS and power electronics is important, but the role is not limited to power supplies; the engineer must also support control boards, interface boards, communication boards, and product variants.


Key Responsibilities

PCB Layout Ownership

  • Create production-ready PCB layouts from schematics, netlists, mechanical constraints, placement guidelines, interface requirements, and electrical design rules.
  • Own component placement, routing, power and ground plane strategy, copper pours, keepouts, cutouts, mounting features, connector placement, board outline integration checks.
  • Implement Altium design rules including net classes, clearance rules, differential pair rules, impedance rules, high-current rules, polygon rules, creepage/clearance rules, and DRC settings.
  • Coordinate PCB stack-up, material selection, copper thickness, via strategy, impedance control, fabrication notes, panelization inputs, and manufacturability constraints with PCB vendors.
  • Create and maintain schematic symbols, PCB footprints, 3D models, component libraries, and verified land patterns as per IPC and manufacturer recommendations.

Industrial, Embedded and Communication PCB Layout

  • Layout microcontroller or microprocessor-based industrial control boards with mixed-signal circuitry, ADC sensing, opto-isolated IO, relay interfaces, and field wiring terminals.
  • Implement PCB layout for Ethernet, CAN, RS485, RS232, USB, SPI, I2C, UART, Modbus/TCP-related hardware, isolated transceivers, magnetics, and surge protection.
  • Apply routing discipline for impedance-controlled nets, and differential pairs.

RF Module and Wireless Interface Integration

  • Integrate RF modules and wireless sections such as BLE, Zigbee, Wi-SUN, LoRa/Sub-GHz, Wi-Fi, cellular modules, or proprietary RF modules as applicable to product architecture.
  • Apply RF layout best practices including antenna keepout, ground reference continuity, feed-line routing, matching network placement, module keepout rules, shielding provisions, and separation from noisy switching/power areas.

Power Electronics, High-Voltage and Protection Layout

  • Layout power sections including offline AC input circuits, AC-DC SMPS, DC-DC converters, LDOs, battery charger paths, battery backup paths, 24V distribution, high-current rails.
  • For offline AC-DC designs, support layout of 85-265 VAC input sections, EMI filters, bridge rectifiers, PFC or pre-regulator stages, high-voltage DC bus, isolated converter sections, auxiliary supplies, feedback circuits, and high-current 24V output paths.
  • Optimize copper width, copper weight, via arrays, bus routing, current loops, thermal relief, heat spreading, and component placement for high-current and thermally constrained designs.
  • Work with hardware and power electronics engineers to implement placement constraints for magnetics, MOSFETs, diodes, controllers, optocouplers, safety capacitors, current transformers, sense resistors, bulk capacitors, and output capacitors.

High Voltage, Insulation, Creepage and Clearance

  • Implement safe layout separation between AC mains, primary circuits, secondary circuits, SELV, battery, earth, chassis, field wiring, RF sections, and low-voltage control domains.
  • Apply creepage and clearance requirements for high-voltage AC supplies, reinforced/basic insulation boundaries, isolated feedback paths.
  • Use PCB slots, keepout zones, isolation barriers, component spacing, silkscreen markings, and mechanical clearances to support safety compliance, and hipot robustness.
  • Ensure correct placement and spacing for fuse, MOV, NTC/inrush limiter, X capacitors, Y capacitors, common-mode choke, safety capacitors, optocouplers, relays, transformer isolation system, and safety-rated terminal blocks when present in the design.

EMI/EMC, Grounding and Signal/Power Integrity

  • Apply EMI-conscious layout practices for conducted and radiated emissions, including return-current control, noisy/quiet ground strategy, chassis/earth strategy, and loop-area minimization.
  • Route high dv/dt and high di/dt nodes with controlled loop area and adequate spacing from MCU, RF, Ethernet, CAN, RS485, low-level analog, sensing, communication, and feedback signals.
  • Perform basic signal-integrity and power-integrity checks for critical nets, impedance-controlled interfaces, differential pairs, sensitive analog circuits, and high-current distribution paths.

DFM, DFA, DFT and Release Documentation

  • Generate complete PCB release packages: Altium source files, Gerber/ODB++, NC drill, IPC-356 netlist, pick-and-place, assembly drawings, fabrication drawings, stack-up notes, impedance tables, BOM support files, 3D STEP files, and DRC reports.
  • Implement DFM/DFA/DFT requirements including test points, bed-of-nails accessibility, fiducials, tooling holes, component orientation consistency, labeling, service access, programming/debug connectors, and manufacturable clearances.

Cross-Functional Support

  • Collaborate with mechanical engineering to ensure enclosure fit, airflow/thermal path, creepage to metalwork, connector access, antenna placement, cable routing, mounting, serviceability, and labeling constraints are reflected in the PCB layout.
  • Work with compliance teams to support UL, ULC, FM, VDS, LPCB, IEC, NEC, FCC, CE, and EMC compliance expectations applicable to industrial and fire/life-safety products.


Qualifications

  • Experience: 5-10 years of hands-on PCB layout or PCB design experience for industrial electronics, embedded control systems, communication products, power electronics, or safety-critical electronic products.
  • Bachelor's degree, diploma, or equivalent experience in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Electronics & Telecommunication, or a related discipline.
  • Mandatory hands-on expertise in Altium Designer, including schematic-to-PCB workflow, rule setup, component libraries, polygon management, 3D clearance review, DRC closure, variant handling, and manufacturing output generation.
  • Experience with industrial interfaces such as Ethernet, CAN, RS485/RS232, USB, SPI, I2C, UART, opto-isolated IO, relay interfaces, and field wiring protection circuits.
  • Experience with power-supply and power-distribution layout, including AC input sections, DC-DC converters, high-current 24 V rails, battery charging/discharging paths, reverse-polarity protection, surge protection, and thermal copper design.
  • Working knowledge of EMI/EMC-aware layout for communication interfaces, RF modules, SMPS/power sections, relay/inductive loads, field wiring, and mixed-signal electronics.
  • Familiarity with IPC-2221, IPC-7351, IPC-A-600/610 concepts, DFM/DFA/DFT practices, PCB fabrication constraints, soldering/assembly constraints, and PCB vendor review processes.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work directly with design engineers, firmware engineers, mechanical engineers, manufacturing teams, PCB vendors, and compliance/test teams.


Tech Stack & Tools

  • PCB Layout : Altium Designer mandatory; Cadence Allegro, OrCAD PCB Designer, PADS, KiCad or SolidWorks PCB exposure is a plus.
  • Industrial Interfaces : Ethernet, CAN, RS485, RS232, USB, SPI, I2C, UART, Modbus, TCP/IP hardware support, isolated transceivers, magnetics, termination, surge protection, ESD protection, and field wiring interfaces.
  • RF and Wireless : BLE, Zigbee, Wi-SUN, LoRa/Sub-GHz, Wi-Fi, cellular modules, RF module layout, antenna keepout, matching network placement, shielding, and RF certification support.
  • Power and Protection : AC input circuits, AC-DC SMPS exposure, DC-DC converters, buck, boost, LDO, battery chargers, 24 V distribution, high-current rails, fuses, relays, MOVs, TVS, common-mode chokes, and protection circuits.
  • Safety and Compliance : UL/ULC/FM/VDS/LPCB/IEC/NEC/FCC/CE awareness, creepage/clearance rules, reinforced/basic insulation concepts, hipot considerations, safety component spacing, and EMC layout practices.
