Controls Hardware Engineer

We are seeking a
Controls Hardware Engineer
to support strategic manufacturing initiatives by developing, managing, and deploying industrial control system hardware (ICSH) standards for continuous manufacturing environments. This role offers a flexible work arrangement with a combination of office time, site visits, and remote work. Candidates should ideally be located within commuting distance of a major manufacturing or corporate facility.
Key Responsibilities

Develop, maintain, and enforce Industrial Control System Hardware (ICSH) standards, approved hardware lists, and documentation practices across operational technology (OT) environments.

Design and review control system hardware installations and supporting documentation to ensure compliance with functional requirements and industry standards such as IEC, UL, NFPA, and NEMA.

Support the development and review of Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and related manufacturing documentation.

Provide technical guidance to engineering and implementation teams regarding ICS hardware systems, functional requirements, and documentation.

Maintain documentation standards, including CAD drawing management and repository organization.

Serve as a subject matter expert by mentoring, training, and supporting technical teams across the organization.

Manage hardware lab environments to ensure reliability, functionality, and testing readiness.

Monitor hardware lifecycle, technology changes, and obsolescence risks, communicating impacts to stakeholders.

Assist manufacturing facilities with troubleshooting and resolving operational technology and control system issues.

Collaborate cross-functionally to support business initiatives, operational improvements, and continuous improvement efforts.

Travel up to 30% during the first year, decreasing to approximately 20% once established in the role.
Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (preferably Electrical Engineering) or equivalent combination of education and experience.

7+ years of experience in control system hardware design, electrical design, or panel design.

3+ years of experience with Siemens automation products, including S7-1500 PLCs, S120 drives, or G120 drive systems.

Experience with process control and motion control systems.

Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD.

Experience supporting brownfield manufacturing environments.

Ability to perform or review load studies, cable sizing, and equipment specifications.

Strong engineering calculation skills with knowledge of low- to medium-voltage electrical systems.

Familiarity with Arc Flash studies and mitigation practices.

Ability to interpret and validate single-line electrical drawings.
Preferred Qualifications

2+ years working with PLC-controlled manufacturing systems.

Experience in instrumentation application and design.

Exposure to mechanical systems and industrial power distribution.

Experience using AutoCAD Electrical and symbol libraries.

Knowledge of power distribution systems in manufacturing environments.
