Job Description

About MUUD Health

MUUD Health is a fully remote mental health organization focused on delivering integrated care, wellness coaching, and digital health innovation. Founded in 2018, MUUD brings together clinical services, education, and technology to support holistic mental health and human performance.

MUUD operates across three core areas: MUUD Clinic, MUUD Academy, and MUUD Tech. MUUD Clinic provides psychiatry, psychotherapy, and wellness coaching services. MUUD Academy is a NBHWC-certified wellness coach training program focused on developing future practitioners and expanding access to coaching-based care. MUUD Tech is focused on building digital tools that support mental health engagement, including the MUUD app, which is currently in development and preparing for beta testing, with future exploration of wearable and tracking-based technologies.

Across all three areas, MUUD’s work is centered on improving access to mental health support through a combination of clinical care, education, and technology-enabled tools.

About the Role

MUUD Health is seeking an adaptive Hardware Engineer: Prototyping & Integration (Contract). This person will own the physical evolution of the MUUD Ring—our dedicated smart ring designed to capture real-time biometric signals and behavioral data for mental fitness tracking.

This position operates at the direct intersection of structural product design, mechanical fabrication, and embedded systems software. You will be responsible for translating early-stage functional specs and concept sketches into fully functioning, physical proof-of-concept wearables that sync flawlessly with the developing MUUD App ecosystem.

We’re looking for a versatile, hands-on "builder" who is comfortable managing the entire lifecycle of an early hardware prototype: from modeling the physical form factor in 3D to wiring components and writing the script-level code that turns raw biometric signals into actionable insight.

Key Responsibilities

3D Modeling & Mechanical Design

  • Design, iterate, and refine the physical architecture and structural enclosure of the MUUD Ring
  • Maximize internal layout efficiency to accommodate micro-components (sensors, battery, antenna) while maintaining a comfortable, ergonomic wearable form factor
  • Prepare, optimize, and manage design files for rapid-prototyping fabrication methods like high-resolution 3D printing or micro-machining

Hands-on Hardware Prototyping

  • Physically assemble low-volume prototype variants of the smart ring, managing component alignment and micro-soldering tasks
  • Maintain a bench-top testing environment to troubleshoot physical hardware defects, perform power-consumption audits, and manage battery optimization
  • Source, evaluate, and test modular physical components (biometric sensors, micro-controllers) to find the optimal performance-to-size ratio

Firmware & Software Integration

  • Write and debug script-level firmware to bridge physical sensors with internal microcontrollers
  • Establish secure peripheral communication channels using standard protocols to manage real-time biometric data streams
  • Coordinate to ensure physical hardware signals transfer seamlessly via local APIs or Bluetooth/Wi-Fi communication stacks to the MUUD mobile app

Cross-Functional Validation

  • Conduct rigorous device bring-up testing, documenting data accuracy, sensor responsiveness, and system bottlenecks
  • Work collaboratively to ensure the hardware's data output aligns with the clinical metrics required for MUUD's mental fitness archetypes

Required Skills & Experience

  • Proven background in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, mechatronics, or a hands-on product development equivalent
  • Strong proficiency with 3D modeling and CAD workflows using SolidWorks, Autodesk Fusion 360, or similar suites
  • High comfort level with physical workbench fabrication, including precision micro-soldering, circuit troubleshooting, and multimeter use
  • Practical experience programming embedded systems and microcontrollers using C/C++ or Python
  • Clear understanding of core hardware communication protocols (I2C, SPI, UART)
  • Ability to work independently and manage complex R&D milestones within a fast-paced, remote startup environment

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • Direct experience developing wearable consumer tech, biometric sensors, or IoT connected devices
  • Familiarity with micro-battery optimization or ultra-low-power asset management
  • Experience collaborating on cross-functional initiatives alongside mobile software developers, product managers, or clinical healthcare professionals
  • Possession of or easy access to a baseline hardware prototyping/workbench setup

What We Offer

  • Competitive contract-based compensation commensurate with technical experience
  • The opportunity to directly build, shape, and iterate on a foundational wearable health device from its early stages
  • A meaningful contribution to an innovative, mission-driven ecosystem transforming how the world approaches proactive mental wellness
