FPGA Firmware Engineer (VHDL)
Bellshill, North Lanarkshire | Up to £50,000 | Permanent
Are you an FPGA Engineer who enjoys solving real-world engineering challenges rather than working exclusively on firmware?
We're supporting a growing technology business that is expanding its FPGA product range as existing products approach end-of-life. This is a rare opportunity to join a small, highly collaborative engineering team where you'll play a key role in the development of next-generation FPGA-based products and help strengthen the company's in-house FPGA capability.
This is a broad engineering role that combines FPGA development, hardware troubleshooting, system-level thinking and hands-on problem solving. You'll be involved throughout the product lifecycle, from development and testing through to fault-finding and product improvement.
Why Join Our Client?
-
Play a key role in expanding a new generation of FPGA-based products.
-
Join a growing engineering business with ambitious plans for future development.
-
Work on challenging projects involving high-speed data acquisition and processing.
-
Gain exposure across firmware, hardware, testing and system-level design.
-
Be part of a close-knit team where your technical input has a direct impact.
What You'll Do
-
Design and develop FPGA firmware solutions using VHDL.
-
Develop high-speed data acquisition, processing and storage systems.
-
Work on multichannel ADC sampling applications operating above 1GHz.
-
Develop and maintain communication interfaces including USB, Ethernet and SPI.
-
Analyse schematics, PCB layouts and physical hardware to diagnose issues.
-
Debug and optimise both FPGA firmware and electronic hardware.
-
Develop simple software tools and scripts to support testing, validation and automation.
-
Support end-to-end system and board-level design activities.
-
Select components and contribute to technical design decisions.
-
Collaborate with a small engineering team to develop innovative products and solutions.
What We're Looking For

-
Excellent VHDL knowledge.
-
Experience with Xilinx devices and toolchains would be highly advantageous.
-
Ability to work confidently across both firmware and hardware environments.
-
Experience analysing schematics, PCB designs and electronic systems.
-
Strong fault-finding and debugging skills.
-
Understanding of high-speed data acquisition and processing systems.
-
Experience with communication protocols such as USB, Ethernet and SPI.
-
Basic software or scripting experience for test and validation activities.
-
A proactive engineer who enjoys taking ownership of technical challenges and delivering practical solutions.
Desirable Skills
-
Degree in Electronics Engineering or a related discipline.
-
RF or low-noise electronics experience.
-
Experience with multichannel ADC systems.
-
Knowledge of real-time processing architectures.
-
Exposure to PCB design tools and board-level electronics.
-
Experience developing automated test tools or engineering utilities.
