Why This Role Matters

MissionHires is seeking an Embedded Software Engineer to join a leading RF, FPGA, and DSP engineering team building rugged, high-performance embedded systems for defense, aerospace, and scientific applications. You will develop and enhance embedded C software, collaborate closely with FPGA, hardware, and systems engineers, debug complex hardware/software interactions using lab instrumentation, and create automated test solutions to ensure world-class product quality. This full-time role is based in Austin, TX, offers competitive compensation and benefits, and provides significant growth in embedded, FPGA, DSP, and test automation domains.

How You'll Contribute

  • Design, implement, and maintain embedded software in C for microcontroller- and processor-based systems
  • Debug and troubleshoot complex firmware and hardware/software interactions using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, spectrum analyzers, and signal generators
  • Collaborate with FPGA, hardware, and systems engineers to investigate issues, develop solutions, and enhance product reliability
  • Contribute across the product lifecycle, including new product development, product improvements, and sustaining engineering
  • Develop automated test solutions, scripts, and tools to validate functionality, performance, and reliability
  • Perform root-cause analysis and drive corrective actions for embedded system defects
  • Support board bring-up, low-level software integration, and hardware validation
  • Participate in code reviews, configuration management, and modern CI-driven workflows
  • Document designs, test procedures, and troubleshooting guides; support customer-facing technical issues as needed

What Makes You a Great Fit

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 3+ years of professional embedded software development experience in C
  • Strong embedded debugging skills and direct experience working with lab equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, spectrum analyzers, signal generators)
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex embedded hardware/software interactions
  • Solid understanding of embedded system architecture and low-level software/hardware interfaces
  • Experience developing software for microcontroller or processor-based systems
  • Demonstrated root-cause analysis and independent problem-solving skills
  • Experience spanning the product lifecycle: new development, enhancements, and sustaining engineering
  • Desired: Experience with BSPs and low-level device driver development
  • Desired: Embedded Linux or Yocto/PetaLinux; Linux driver development and debugging
  • Desired: Understanding of FPGA architecture and collaboration with FPGA engineers; AMD/Xilinx toolchains
  • Desired: Python scripting for automation or test; familiarity with Git, CI, and modern workflows
  • Desired: Familiarity with TestStand, LabVIEW, Bash, Tcl, or Expect; automated test or engineering validation development
  • Desired: Ability to read schematics and interpret PCB layouts
  • Desired: Experience with RTOS-based systems and exposure to RF, DSP, data acquisition, or high-speed digital systems
  • Desired: Industry experience in defense, aerospace, telecommunications, robotics, industrial automation, semiconductor equipment, or medical devices; customer-facing technical support
