Required Desired:
- Deep knowledge of embedded software architecture and development processes
- Experience supporting software through the product lifecycle, including mass production
- Strong understanding of vehicle EE architectures and automotive development practices
- Expertise in functional safety (ISO 26262) and its implementation in software
- Experience designing complex embedded systems, including defining system topologies and component interfaces
- Strong understanding of automotive EE architectures and development lifecycles
- Proficiency in real-time operating systems, embedded software frameworks, and interface development
- Programming languages: C, C++, Java, HTML5, and scripting languages
- Familiarity with connected embedded software components and hardware peripherals
- Knowledge of connected vehicle infotainment and communication software systems
- Work Flexibility: Physical requirements, travel requirements, work schedule, etc.

We are seeking an experienced Software Engineer to support the Hardware Platform Development team at CARIAD. This role focuses on embedded software development for next-generation vehicle electronic systems. The Software Engineer will use their strong background in embedded systems, automotive software development, and system-level architecture to collaborate with cross-functional teams from VW Group and external partners to design, develop, and deliver production software. This includes contributing to proof-of-concept projects and supporting the integration of advanced embedded solutions in future vehicle platforms.
Role Responsibilities: List essential functions in order of importance; include percentage of time spent performing each function (total should equal 100%)
Embedded Software Development – (80%)
- Participate in the definition and design of embedded software for vehicle systems
- Assist hardware teams with component selection, schematic reviews, bring-up, and debugging
- Develop/integrate bootloaders, device drivers, kernels, and upgrade mechanisms
- Contribute to base software (BSP), MCAL, drivers, diagnostics, and debugging tools
- Support hardware verification and board bring-up activities
- Interface with third-party vendors and open-source communities as needed
- Collaborate with internal teams to gather software requirements, including safety and security
- Build and maintain development infrastructure, including automated testing environments
- Ensure high-quality, validated software feature delivery

Lead rapid prototyping efforts to explore innovative hardware/software solutions
- Work closely with contract manufacturers to develop test software for ECU bring-up, validation, and production testing
- Identify and mitigate technical and project execution risks

We’re looking for a true legend – someone with abstract thinking and deep expertise in low-level software development. You’ll build vendor-agnostic tooling for MCU and peripheral integration to solve hardware-software integration once and for all. We work at the intersection of embedded systems, code generation, compilers, and machine learning. It’s your chance to help redefine how low-level development is done.
Responsibilities
- Drive the architecture of the driver structures and system layout
- Define scalable patterns for cross-architectural integration across bare-metal, Zephyr, Linux, and other environments
- Deconstruct complex SoC device trees and translate hardware descriptions into structured internal models for automated reasoning
- Partner with the ML team to shape data and annotation models for AI-driven data-extraction tooling
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in embedded systems development, including bare-metal and RTOS-based systems
- Proficiency in C/C++
- Familiarity with firmware configuration, SoC bring-up, and system-level debugging
- Hands-on experience with code generation tools, or low-level compiler/decompiler/emulator technologies
- Strong background in embedded toolchains: compilers, linkers, debuggers, and build systems
- Python or scripting for automation and tooling is a plus
- Experience with functional-safety standards is a plus
