Job Description

Location: Brentwood, NY

Position: Full-Time

Working Pattern: Onsite

We are looking for an Embedded Software Engineer to join a collaborative engineering team developing embedded Linux applications for innovative products. This is a hands-on software engineering role where you'll be involved throughout the full software development lifecycle, from requirements and architecture through development, testing and deployment.

Working alongside hardware, firmware and systems engineers, you'll develop robust, high-performance software for embedded Linux platforms while contributing to new product development in an agile environment.

The Role

As an Embedded Software Engineer, you will:

  • Design, develop and maintain embedded applications in C/C++ for Linux-based systems.
  • Participate in the full software development lifecycle, from requirements through to deployment and support.
  • Develop secure communication protocols and networking solutions across Wi-Fi, WAN and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).
  • Build scalable, maintainable software using object-oriented design principles.
  • Develop multi-threaded applications and implement efficient inter-process communication (IPC).
  • Collaborate closely with software, hardware and systems engineers to deliver integrated solutions.
  • Troubleshoot, debug and optimise software running on embedded Linux platforms.
  • Contribute to code reviews, technical discussions and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Work within an Agile development environment to deliver high-quality software on schedule.

Required Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related discipline.
  • 3–8 years' commercial experience developing software in C/C++.
  • Strong experience developing applications for Linux.
  • Solid understanding of object-oriented programming and software design principles.
  • Experience developing multi-threaded applications.
  • Experience with inter-process communication (IPC).
  • Strong debugging and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience developing embedded Linux applications using Yocto.
  • Experience with Bluetooth development, particularly the BlueZ stack and GATT protocol.
  • Experience with networking technologies including Wi-Fi, WAN and BLE.
  • Familiarity with ConnMan and WPA Supplicant.
  • Knowledge of secure communications and network protocol implementation.

Additional Experience That Would Be Beneficial

  • GStreamer or FFmpeg development experience.
  • MIDI protocol development.
  • Experience developing multimedia or audio applications.
  • A background or interest in music technology.

The Ideal Candidate

You'll be a proactive engineer who enjoys solving complex technical problems and working as part of a multidisciplinary team. You should be comfortable taking ownership of your work, collaborating with colleagues across software and hardware disciplines, and contributing throughout the product development lifecycle.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys developing high-performance Linux applications, working with modern embedded technologies, and seeing products progress from concept through to deployment.

The client can be flexible on either a high pay W2 contractor basis or a full time permanent basis.
