Job Description

Embedeed Linux Engineer

Digital Substation Edge Platform

Company: EcoPhi AB

Location: Gothenburg, Sweden / Hybrid

About EcoPhi

EcoPhi AB is a Swedish deep-tech company developing next-generation digital substation and grid automation technology. Our mission is to help electric utilities modernize substations by replacing multiple dedicated hardware systems with software-defined, AI-powered applications running on a unified edge platform.

EcoPhi’s technology combines high-speed measurement acquisition, IEC 61850-based communication, virtualized substation applications, and AI-driven analytics for fault prediction, fault location, asset monitoring, dynamic transformer rating, dynamic line rating, and grid intelligence.

Our core products are the QMU 800, a high-speed intelligent merging unit for digitizing current and voltage signals in substations, and the CMPC 800, an edge computing platform that runs advanced monitoring, analytics, and automation applications. Together, they enable utilities to turn substations into intelligent, software-defined digital assets.

We are now looking for a strong Embedded Linux Engineer to join the development of the intelligent.

About the Role

Our advanced substation applications such as power quality monitoring, disturbance recording, and partial discharge monitoring rely on robust real-time communication. As a linux engineer you will be responsible for the interface between the QMU 800 merging units and the CMPC 800 server. The communication is based on low-latency ethernet layer 2 communication with highly accurate PTP time-synchronization.

You will be situated right at the centre of our full application, bridging the gap between sampling analog values and distributing them to all downstream analysis applications. The role will provide challenging and stimulating work with a lot of opportunities to develop new and crucial skills.

Responsibilities

You will help build the backend foundation of the substation communication, including:

  • High-frequency sampling of measured data
  • Network topology design
  • Real-time data ingestion services
  • Signal-processing services
  • IEC61850 compliant low-latency data streaming
  • Build pipelines for continuous integration and deployment
  • Edge deployment and update mechanisms for customer installations.

  • Required Skills

We are looking for someone with strong experience in:

    • Linux and especially linux in an embedded environment
    • System-level programming
    • High-performance sampling and streaming of data
    • Efficient computation and performance optimization
    • Working with large data streams or time-series data
    • Building reliable production software with clean software architecture, testing, documentation, and maintainable code.

    Strong Advantages

Experience in any of the following is highly valuable:

    • Yocto build system
    • Ansible
    • PTP time-synchronisation
    • Real-time communication
    • Industrial edge computing
    • Common linux tools, systemd, chrony, etc.
    • High-frequency measurement data.
    • Electrical power systems or substation automation.
    • IEC 61850, sampled values, GOOSE, MMS, or related protocols.
    • Rust programming
    • Cybersecurity for industrial systems.

    Who You Are

    You are someone who:

    • Has a deep linux appreciation
    • Can build efficient and reliable software, not only prototypes
    • Understands performance, scalability, and resource limitations
    • Is comfortable working close to data, computation, and operating systems
    • Can take ownership of a backend module from design to production
    • Likes solving hard engineering problems
    • Wants to build software that runs in real electrical infrastructure.

    Why Join EcoPhi?

EcoPhi is building software-defined digital substations. Our technology allows utilities to virtualize functions that traditionally required separate hardware, such as power quality monitoring, PMU, disturbance recording, partial discharge monitoring, metering, fault analysis, and asset intelligence.

You will work on real products deployed in the energy sector and help build the backend software layer for the next generation of intelligent power-grid infrastructure.
