Role Overview
The Electronics & Embedded Software Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and validation of the electronic hardware and embedded software,
The role covers the full electronics development cycle — from circuit design and PCB layout through to firmware development, integration, and test — and is central to the technical capability and product quality of the business.
The postholder works closely with the Mechanical Design Engineering team to ensure electronic and mechanical elements of a product are properly integrated and plays a key role in the test facility — developing test procedures, carrying out validation testing, and supporting fault diagnosis on both new and existing products. As with all engineering roles, there is an expectation of hands-on involvement across the workshop and test environment as well as the design office.
Key Responsibilities
Electronics Design & PCB Development

Design electronic circuits and systems to meet product and customer requirements

Produce schematic designs and PCB layouts using appropriate EDA tooling

Select components with consideration for performance, availability, cost, and compliance

Manage PCB manufacture and assembly, liaising with suppliers and reviewing outputs against specification

Maintain and update electronics design documentation, ensuring version control and accurate record-keeping within the quality management system

Support design reviews and contribute to the assessment of design feasibility at the concept stage
Embedded Software & Firmware

Develop embedded firmware for microcontrollers and related hardware used within battery management and monitoring systems

Write clean, maintainable code with appropriate documentation and version control

Integrate firmware with hardware, verifying functionality through systematic bench and system-level testing

Debug and resolve software and hardware integration issues arising during development or in the field

Maintain and update existing firmware as products evolve or issues are identified

Contribute to software architecture decisions and the development of coding standards and practices
Testing & Validation

Develop and execute test plans and procedures for electronic and software elements of products

Carry out functional, performance, and environmental testing in the test facility
-
Record and analyse test results, producing clear documentation of findings and any actions required

Support first build and first article activity, verifying that electronic systems perform to design intent

Investigate and diagnose faults on products in development and in service, identifying root causes and implementing fixes

Contribute to the continuous improvement of test processes and test equipment
Compliance & Certification

Ensure electronic designs meet relevant regulatory and safety standards applicable to markets, including defence, aerospace, and industrial sectors

Support product certification activity relating to electronics and software, working with Engineering and the Head of Technical Operations

Maintain awareness of evolving standards and legislation relevant to battery electronics and embedded systems

Ensure all design and test documentation supports compliance and certification requirements
Cross-functional Collaboration

Work closely with the Mechanical Design Engineering team to ensure effective integration of electronic and mechanical systems

Liaise with customers and suppliers on technical matters relating to electronics and software as required

Support the wider engineering team with electronic and software knowledge where it adds value to other projects

Contribute to issue logging and change management processes in line with quality procedures
