Job Description

Role: Electronics & Embedded Software Engineer

Location: Silverstone Park, Northamptonshire

Experience: Junior to Mid-Level but must have 1 years' experience

Salary: £30,000 - £40,000

Role Overview

The Electronics & Embedded Software Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and validation of the electronic hardware and embedded software,

The role covers the full electronics development cycle — from circuit design and PCB layout through to firmware development, integration, and test — and is central to the technical capability and product quality of the business.

The postholder works closely with the Mechanical Design Engineering team to ensure electronic and mechanical elements of a product are properly integrated and plays a key role in the test facility — developing test procedures, carrying out validation testing, and supporting fault diagnosis on both new and existing products. As with all engineering roles, there is an expectation of hands-on involvement across the workshop and test environment as well as the design office.

Key Responsibilities

Electronics Design & PCB Development

  • Design electronic circuits and systems to meet product and customer requirements
  • Produce schematic designs and PCB layouts using appropriate EDA tooling
  • Select components with consideration for performance, availability, cost, and compliance
  • Manage PCB manufacture and assembly, liaising with suppliers and reviewing outputs against specification
  • Maintain and update electronics design documentation, ensuring version control and accurate record-keeping within the quality management system
  • Support design reviews and contribute to the assessment of design feasibility at the concept stage

Embedded Software & Firmware

  • Develop embedded firmware for microcontrollers and related hardware used within battery management and monitoring systems
  • Write clean, maintainable code with appropriate documentation and version control
  • Integrate firmware with hardware, verifying functionality through systematic bench and system-level testing
  • Debug and resolve software and hardware integration issues arising during development or in the field
  • Maintain and update existing firmware as products evolve or issues are identified
  • Contribute to software architecture decisions and the development of coding standards and practices

Testing & Validation

  • Develop and execute test plans and procedures for electronic and software elements of products
  • Carry out functional, performance, and environmental testing in the test facility
  • Record and analyse test results, producing clear documentation of findings and any actions required
  • Support first build and first article activity, verifying that electronic systems perform to design intent
  • Investigate and diagnose faults on products in development and in service, identifying root causes and implementing fixes
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of test processes and test equipment

Compliance & Certification

  • Ensure electronic designs meet relevant regulatory and safety standards applicable to markets, including defence, aerospace, and industrial sectors
  • Support product certification activity relating to electronics and software, working with Engineering and the Head of Technical Operations
  • Maintain awareness of evolving standards and legislation relevant to battery electronics and embedded systems
  • Ensure all design and test documentation supports compliance and certification requirements

Cross-functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with the Mechanical Design Engineering team to ensure effective integration of electronic and mechanical systems
  • Liaise with customers and suppliers on technical matters relating to electronics and software as required
  • Support the wider engineering team with electronic and software knowledge where it adds value to other projects
  • Contribute to issue logging and change management processes in line with quality procedures
