Job Description

Who We Are

PAYTAG builds self-checkout, RFID, and retail automation systems — physical products running in live stores, connecting edge hardware to cloud services in real time. Our stack spans embedded Linux devices, IoT protocols, and GCP-hosted services. We ship things that exist in the real world, not just in the cloud.

We're looking for a senior engineer who's done both sides: robust backend systems and the low-level work that makes hardware actually talk to them.

What You'll Own

  • Design and develop Linux-based products end-to-end — from device-side software to cloud integration
  • Write production Python and C# for hardware integration layers, backend services, and automation
  • Connect devices to GCP infrastructure (Cloud Run, Compute VMs) and third-party systems
  • Integrate hardware peripherals via TCP/IP, serial communication (RS-232/RS-485), and Bluetooth Classic
  • Troubleshoot and optimize real-world deployments — live hardware, live customers
  • Work directly with customers and partners on integrations and technical escalations
  • Contribute to product architecture and shape the technical roadmap
  • What We're Looking For

B.Sc. in Software/Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent hands-on experience

3+ years with Linux-based or embedded systems (not just Linux as a dev environment)

Strong Python; working knowledge of C# and bash

Hands-on experience with low-level communication protocols: TCP/IP, serial, Bluetooth Classic

Experience with GCP (Cloud Run, VMs)

Customer-facing experience — integrations, on-site support, or technical escalations

High ownership mindset and strong problem-solving skills

  • This is not a web or enterprise software role. If your background is primarily Java, Spring, or large-scale distributed web systems, this probably isn't the right fit.
  • Big Plus

RFID experience (UHF or HF) — we use it extensively

Previous technical leadership

Familiarity with SolidWorks for reviewing hardware models

  • The Role in Plain Terms

You'll be the engineer who bridges the gap between hardware and the cloud. One day you're debugging why a serial-connected RFID reader drops packets under load; the next you're designing the GCP service it reports to. You'll own problems fully, work with a small focused team, and see your work running in actual stores.
