Job Description

Requisition Number: 20152

Contract Type: Permanent

Location(s):

Betzdorf, LU

(Senior) Engineer, Power Electronics, meoSphere

The job responsibilities outlined in this document are not exhaustive and may evolve over time and be reviewed according to business needs.

Programme Description

meoSphere is the next generation of SES’s Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellites, delivering secure connectivity services for governments, enterprises, and commercial customers worldwide, while enabling high-speed broadband to eliminate connectivity gaps.

To accelerate development, improve quality, and increase vertical integration, SES is bringing key payload development and integration capabilities in-house within a state-of-the-art manufacturing and test environment.

Role Description Summary

We are seeking a Senior Power Electronics Engineer to lead the design, development, and optimization of advanced satellite payload power systems. This role is central to defining power architectures, ensuring robust energy conversion, and guaranteeing mission‑critical performance in harsh space environments. You will drive technical decisions, mentor engineering teams, and collaborate across disciplines to deliver high‑reliability new-space hardware for next‑generation spacecraft.

Success in this role requires deep expertise in high‑efficiency power conversion, radiation‑tolerant design, high‑density PCB/PCBA implementation, and system‑level power integrity. You will work closely with mechanical, thermal, manufacturing, and procurement teams across an agile international environment.

Primary Responsibilities / Key Result Areas

Power System Architecture & Design

  • Define end‑to‑end power architectures for satellite payloads, including DC‑DC conversion, point‑of‑load regulation, and high‑efficiency distributed power systems.
  • Lead the design of high‑reliability power converters (isolated and non‑isolated), magnetics, and control loops for wide input/output ranges.
  • Develop radiation‑tolerant and fault‑tolerant power solutions, including redundancy schemes, derating strategies, and component selection for space environments.
  • Own power integrity (PI) and system‑level performance, including transient response, noise mitigation, and stability analysis.
  • Guide PCB layout teams on best practices for high‑power, high‑density, and mixed‑signal designs (creepage/clearance, thermal paths, current loops, EMI/EMC).

Analysis, Simulation & Verification

  • Perform detailed modelling and simulation of power stages (SPICE, SIMPLIS).
  • Conduct worst‑case analysis, reliability assessments, and derating analysis for space‑grade hardware.
  • Validate designs through lab testing, including efficiency, load‑transient, thermal, EMI/EMC, and fault‑mode characterisation.
  • Review and approve S‑parameters, PI/PDN models, and system‑level power budgets.

Technical Management & Collaboration

  • Provide technical management across multidisciplinary teams and act as a subject‑matter expert for power electronics.
  • Mentor junior engineers and guide design reviews, architecture decisions, and verification strategies.
  • Collaborate with PCB manufacturers, component suppliers, and assembly partners to ensure manufacturability, reliability, and compliance with space‑grade standards.
  • Drive continuous improvement in design methodologies, documentation, and development processes.

Qualifications & Compentencies

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related field; PhD is an asset.
  • 6+ years of experience in power electronics design, preferably in new-space, or other high‑reliability sectors.
  • Demonstrated experience leading complex hardware developments from concept to qualification.
  • Fluency in English; additional languages are an asset.

Technical Expertise

  • Deep experience in power converter design (buck, boost, flyback, forward, LLC, multi‑phase, GaN/SiC‑based topologies).
  • Strong understanding of radiation effects, derating, and reliability for space or high‑reliability applications.
  • Expertise in power integrity, PDN design, and high‑density PCB implementation.
  • Proficiency with simulation tools (SPICE, SIMPLIS, LTspice).
  • Familiarity with high‑speed digital and RF coexistence constraints on mixed‑signal boards.
  • Knowledge of PCB/PCBA manufacturing technologies, materials, and constraints.
  • Experience with Altium Designer or equivalent ECAD tools.
  • Nice to have: Experience with NewSpace development approaches and rapid‑iteration hardware cycles.

Other Key Requirements / Comments

  • The candidate must be eligible for a “SECRET” security clearance, in accordance with the national regulations as well as EU/ESA/NATO equivalents
  • Willing to work at least 60% onsite from office
  • Travel as required for project realization purposes
