A confidential, well-established product design and engineering consultancy is seeking an experienced Embedded Software Engineer to join its team on a
W2 contract basis
. The organisation delivers end-to-end product development services, turning complex ideas into fully engineered, production-ready solutions across embedded systems, electrical, mechanical, and software disciplines.
Projects span connected devices, IoT systems, and low-power embedded products where hardware and firmware are tightly integrated. Engineers work in multidisciplinary teams focused on building real-world, manufacturable solutions.
The Role
We are looking for a
mid-to-senior Embedded Software Engineer
to design, develop, and support firmware for
low-power, connected embedded systems
.
This role is ideal for engineers who enjoy working across both
firmware and hardware-adjacent development
, including close collaboration with electrical and hardware teams.
We are especially interested in candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas:

Wireless / connectivity development (Bluetooth / BLE, Wi-Fi, Zigbee, cellular IoT)

Hardware development or strong hardware collaboration experience

Schematic review and understanding of electronic designs
-
PCB design exposure or hands-on PCB development experience
-
Battery-powered and low-power system design and optimisation
You will be embedded in a team working across full product lifecycles—from early design through to prototype, validation, and production support.
Key Responsibilities
-
Develop and maintain embedded firmware in C/C++ for microcontroller-based systems
-
Design firmware for low-power, battery-operated devices
-
Work with hardware interfaces including I²C, SPI, UART, CAN, GPIO, and ADC
-
Read and interpret schematics and component datasheets or Implement and support wireless communication features (BLE and other IoT protocols)

Support debugging and validation using lab equipment such as oscilloscopes and logic analysers
-
Collaborate closely with hardware, electrical, and systems engineers
-
Contribute to firmware optimisation, verification, and system-level performance improvements
Required Experience
-
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related discipline

7+ years of embedded systems experience
-
Strong proficiency in embedded C/C++

Experience with microcontrollers (e.g. ARM STM32, NXP, AVR, PIC, DSP platforms)

Experience developing bare-metal and/or RTOS-based firmware
-
Experience working with low-power embedded and battery-operated systems
-
Ability to work effectively in hardware-facing engineering environments
Preferred Experience

Exposure to PCB design tools and workflows
-
Strong understanding of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and IoT connectivity

Ability to read and interpret schematics at system level
-
Experience with battery systems, power management, or energy optimisation
-
Familiarity with Silicon Labs BG22 or similar platforms
-
Experience working in client-facing or consultancy-style engineering environments
-
Ability to contribute to system architecture and design decisions
