We are deploying self-propelled battery-electric railcars and vehicles to transform freight logistics and bring innovation to our rail network. Based in St. Louis, MO, we are committed to promoting industrial revitalization, saving lives, and minimizing the environmental impact of trucking.
We actively foster a work environment for every teammate that's welcoming, respectful and inclusive, with great opportunities for professional growth. Find your future with us.
We are seeking a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to own the real-time control firmware running on the autonomy ECU stack of our self-propelled battery-electric railcars and vehicles. The successful candidate will own motor-control and traction-control firmware on RTOS-based ECUs (FreeRTOS, Zephyr, or similar), contribute to architecture decisions across the autonomy software platform, and mentor 2–3 junior embedded engineers. This role sits at the intersection of real-time embedded software, vehicle controls, and safety-relevant systems engineering — taking firmware from hardware bring-up through integration, field validation, and lifecycle support on production rail vehicles.
This is a full-time, 100% in-office role based in St. Louis, MO. You'll work within a team of 3–10 engineers and engage in occasional domestic travel for testing, integration, demonstrations, and customer interactions.
Design & Architecture: Translate vehicle-level requirements into ECU firmware architecture, real-time scheduling strategies, and HW/SW interface specifications for motor-control, traction-control, and inter-ECU communication.
Real-Time Firmware Development: Build and maintain C and C++ firmware on RTOS-based ECUs (FreeRTOS, Zephyr, or similar) covering motor control, traction control, CAN-bus messaging, and distributed control across the autonomy ECU stack.
Hardware Bring-Up & Debugging: Lead on-target debugging using JTAG/SWD, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers; drive hardware bring-up and board-level integration for new ECU revisions.
Testing & Validation: Define and execute unit, integration, and on-vehicle test plans for safety-relevant firmware; partner with systems and validation engineers on hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and field-validation campaigns.
Safety & Reliability: Drive fail-safe design and defensive-coding practices on the embedded codebase — MISRA C/C++ conformance, coverage-driven unit testing, fault injection on critical paths, and, where applicable, traceability against ISO 26262 / EN 50128 / EN 50129 work products.
Lifecycle Support: Triage and resolve field issues across the entire product lifecycle, from prototype to fleet deployment, and feed lessons learned back into firmware and architecture.
Leadership & Mentoring: Mentor 2–3 junior embedded engineers through code review, pairing, and design coaching; lead technical discussions to consensus on architecture and trade-offs.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Represent embedded software in cross-discipline reviews with controls, electrical, systems, and autonomy engineering on interface specs, failure-mode analysis, and integration milestones.
Base salary: $110,000 - $140,000 plus equity
Intramotev offers a comprehensive benefits package for all team members, including:
Medical coverage: We cover 100% of employee medical premiums, plus low-cost dental and vision options.
Vacation: Full-time employees enjoy unlimited paid time off.
Equity: Full-time employees receive equity in the company.
Parental leave: New parents receive paid time off to spend quality time with their family.
At least a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related technical field.
6+ years of experience developing real-time embedded software, including production-shipping work on automotive, rail, or other real-time safety-relevant systems.
Strong proficiency in C and C++ on RTOS platforms (FreeRTOS, Zephyr, or similar), including real-time scheduling and multi-threaded programming.
Hands-on experience developing motor-control or vehicle-control firmware on production hardware.
Experience designing and debugging CAN-bus communication, and on-target debugging using JTAG/SWD, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers.
Track record of taking safety-relevant embedded systems through hardware bring-up, integration, and field validation.
Willingness to expand into technical areas beyond your area of expertise; ability to develop innovative and novel approaches.
Open-minded and comfortable working in a teaming environment as an individual contributor.
Fluent in both written and verbal English.
U.S. Person (immigration or work visa sponsorship will not be provided).
Candidate should have a working knowledge of one or (ideally) multiple areas listed below:
Functional safety standards: ISO 26262 (automotive) or rail equivalents such as EN 50128 / EN 50129.
Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test infrastructure design and bring-up.
Prior rail, EV, or unmanned-systems firmware experience.
Deterministic networking (TSN) or safety-critical inter-ECU communication patterns.
Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education (e.g. Bachelor and/or Master) and typically 6 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. Master + 4 years' related work experience).
This position offers a competitive relocation package for qualified candidates.
