Job Description

Senior Embedded Software Engineer / Software Architect — Deep Light Vision, Lund

Deep Light Vision is hiring a senior embedded software engineer / software architect to help build the software foundation for a new medical imaging instrument from the ground up.

We are developing Ultrasound Optical Tomography for deep tissue imaging, combining laser light, ultrasound, advanced signal processing and quantum-enabled optical detection. Our next major milestone is to complete the first integrated version of the instrument by summer 2027, followed by hospital-based clinical studies.

This is a rare opportunity to shape the architecture, tooling and engineering culture of a complex medical imaging platform at an early stage — not by inheriting a legacy system, but by building the foundation properly from the start.

Why Deep Light Vision

We are working on a fundamentally new way to see inside the body.

Deep Light Vision is developing imaging technology at the intersection of optics, ultrasound, quantum sensing, medical technology and clinical research. The science is hard, the engineering challenge is real, and the potential impact is significant: better non-invasive tissue imaging, with future applications in areas such as breast imaging and physiological tissue characterization.

We are careful not to overstate what is not yet clinically proven. But the technical upside is exactly the kind of challenge worth building carefully for.

You will join a small, highly motivated team of physicists, engineers and clinical collaborators. The software you build will not be peripheral — it will define how the instrument works, how data is acquired, how subsystems interact, how quality is maintained, and how the platform can eventually be developed into a regulated medical device.

This first senior software role is especially important. You will help define the architecture, development workflows and technical culture that future software hires will build on.

We are based in brand new offices in central Lund, minutes from Lund Central Station.

What you will work on

The role spans embedded software, hardware-near control, system architecture and development infrastructure.

You will work with:

  • Embedded and hardware-near software for lasers, detectors, ultrasound systems, motion/control electronics and other instrument subsystems

  • Device drivers, hardware abstraction layers and robust interfaces between software and physical components

  • FPGA-related signal handling and integration with real-time, high-throughput acquisition pipelines

  • Software architecture for a complex imaging instrument with strict requirements on reliability, traceability and maintainability

  • Clear separation of control, monitoring and safety-related functions

  • Calibration routines, automated test procedures and verification workflows

  • Git structure, CI/CD, build systems, documentation structure and development workflows

  • Virtual test environments, simulation and/or hardware-in-the-loop testing to accelerate development safely

  • Software development within a quality management system aligned with ISO 13485 and IEC 62304

  • Responsible use of AI-assisted development tools to support coding, testing, documentation and review — within a framework where engineers always own, understand and verify the result

Over time, the software team will grow to include roles focused more specifically on user interface, clinical workflow, usability and system operation. This first role is focused on building the foundation: architecture, infrastructure, hardware integration and disciplined engineering practice.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for a senior software engineer with strong industrial experience from complex systems close to hardware.

You may come from medical devices, scientific instruments, robotics, industrial automation, telecom hardware, semiconductor equipment, defense/aerospace instrumentation, ultrasound systems, MRI/CT/PET systems or advanced laboratory equipment.

You likely have strong experience in several of the following areas:

  • C/C++, Python and Linux-based development

  • Embedded systems and hardware-near software

  • Device drivers, instrument control or hardware abstraction layers

  • Real-time data acquisition, high-throughput signal processing or FPGA integration

  • Software architecture for complex technical systems

  • Git, CI/CD, build systems and automated testing

  • Requirements, traceability, verification and regulated development

  • Medical device software, IEC 62304, ISO 13485 or similar regulated environments

We value engineering judgement, structure and practical industrial experience more than academic credentials. What matters most is your ability to understand a complex hardware/software system deeply and turn it into robust, testable and maintainable software.

You will thrive here if you enjoy

  • Building systems from the ground up

  • Working close to hardware

  • Moving fast while maintaining structure

  • Taking ownership of architecture and engineering discipline

  • Creating tools and workflows that make the whole team more effective

  • Collaborating with physicists, engineers and clinicians

  • Working on technology intended for future hospital environments

What we offer

  • A genuine greenfield software architecture challenge

  • High ownership from day one

  • The chance to help define the software stack, tooling and engineering practices for a new medical imaging platform

  • Close collaboration with physicists, engineers and leading clinical partners

  • A path toward technical leadership as the software team grows

  • Brand new offices in central Lund, minutes from Lund Central Station

  • A focused, ambitious team working on a difficult and meaningful problem
