Job DescriptionWe are looking for a R&D Engineer to work on Quantum Computing for Earth Observation (QC4EO) activities. You would join our team of multidisciplinary consultants working closely with our customer, the European Space Agency, and often on site at their offices in Frascati, Italy. As a member of our service team, you will provide engineering support to Earth Observation (EO) downstream activities, primarily with a focus on Quantum Computing R&D applied to EO (QC4EO) but also contribute to our Research Innovation Support activities, complementing them with your Quantum Computing know-how. You will support our customer in prototyping and demonstration of quantum computing and hybrid quantum/classical computing for EO applications. You will have the chance to supervise the development of EO cloud exploitation platform projects applied to Earth Observation and will be exposed to leading technologies in Earth Observation from Space, continuously developing and maintaining your own expertise. You will also be in direct contact with European Industry and be involved in the International Cooperation (e.g. GEO, CEOS, OGC) context. Depending on your profile and interest, there will be opportunities to apply your skills, contributing to internal and customer engineering projects.
Your tasks will include:
- Development of novel QC algorithms, novel benchmarking techniques, novel encoding approaches, etc.
- Investigate potential advantages of QC algorithms for EO use cases and benchmarking
- Drafting publications for scientific conferences and journals
- Supporting the organization of events and scientific challenges
- Support ESA internal research activities related to QC4EO, discussing project goals, requirements or methodologies with colleagues or team members
- Support industrial R&D activities related to QC4EO
o Validation and verification of industrial activities
o Participation in progress and review meetings, following up daily activities and implementing technical actions resulting from those meetings
o Support to technical proposal evaluation and deliverables review
o Provision of technical specifications, inputs for new projects and contribution to technical standardisation specifications
- Participation in events, workshops, and conferences (e.g. innovation forums, Summer schools)
Required Skills and Experience:
- Master degree (or equivalent) in a relevant technical or scientific discipline (e.g. computer science, geoinformatics or a technical field that provides similar competences)
- Design, adaptation, and optimization of quantum computing algorithms for application-driven use cases
- Implementation, testing and validation of quantum algorithms on quantum computing platforms, simulators, and emulators
- Benchmarking quantum algorithms, including performance evaluation, complexity considerations, and comparison methodologies
- 3-5 years of experience in the area of Cloud infrastructures and technologies, as well as big data architectures, management, services, applications and formats, especially applied to EO, GIS, image processing (QGis, ArcGis, GeoJSON, Jupyter notebooks, training)
- Fluent in spoken and written English. Knowledge of other languages is a positive asset
- Proactivity, autonomy, problem identification and solving attitude. Team player
- Experience in writing scientific and technical documentation, and in delivering technical presentations
