Job Description

Power Electronics Engineer / San Francisco Bay Area / ONSITE / Market Leading Compensation /

ROLE: Power Electronics Design Engineer

LOCATION: San Francisco Bay Area

WORK POLICY: ONSITE

COMPENSATION: Competitive Base + Equity

TECHNE is supporting a next-generation defence technology company as it builds the power systems for some of the most advanced military platforms currently in development.

This is not a role of maintaining legacy hardware. The company is building its proprietary power architecture from the ground up, and the engineers joining today will define the technology that powers multiple future products.

Power is the product.

The role sits at the centre of the company's engineering organisation, owning the complete lifecycle of power electronics subsystems from architecture through production. You will design high and low voltage power conversion systems, protection circuitry, power distribution networks, and inverter technologies that become core company IP.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Own the end-to-end design of DC/DC and DC/AC power conversion systems
  • Design power distribution, protection logic, and high and low voltage architectures
  • Develop next-generation GaN and SiC power electronics for high-efficiency, high-density applications
  • Produce schematics and PCB layouts in Altium with a focus on thermal performance, power density, and EMI mitigation
  • Lead hardware bring-up, verification, validation, and environmental qualification
  • Design for low electromagnetic signature with MIL-STD-461 considered from the earliest stages of development
  • Support field testing and customer trials to evaluate hardware in operational environments

Required Experience:

  • Two to five years of power electronics hardware design experience
  • Experience designing low and high voltage power conversion systems from concept through production
  • Strong understanding of DC/DC and DC/AC converter topologies and control loop theory
  • EMI and EMC design experience. MIL-STD-461 knowledge is highly desirable
  • Strong laboratory skills using oscilloscopes, power analysers, electronic loads, and thermal imaging equipment
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. Master's degree is advantageous

Desirable Experience:

  • GaN and SiC power electronics
  • Battery systems and safety standards including UN 38.3, UL 2580, and IEC 62133
  • MIL-STD-810 environmental qualification
  • Pulsed power, radar, or electronic warfare applications
  • LTspice, SIMPLIS, MATLAB/Simulink, or COMSOL

The Why?

This is one of those rare opportunities where your engineering decisions define the long-term product architecture, not a single subsystem.

The business is transitioning from engineering integration to fully in-house product development, giving early hires genuine influence over the technology roadmap and engineering culture.

You'll solve complex power electronics challenges, work alongside exceptional engineers, and see your hardware deployed in demanding real-world environments.

The mission is ambitious. Build the next generation of defence power systems capable of outperforming today's industry leaders.
