Job Description

COMPANY INFORMATION

Besxar Space Industries, Inc. (Besxar) is pioneering a new class of space-based manufacturing to overcome the limits of terrestrial semiconductor fabrication. The company builds reusable “Fabships” that harness the ultra-high vacuum (UHV) of space to produce ultra-pure substrates and precursor materials—essential building blocks for next-generation technologies. Manufacturing in space allows purity and yield levels impossible on Earth, effectively doubling chip cost-effectiveness for these critical applications.

Traditional chip factories face constraints in power, cooling, and materials. Besxar’s autonomous orbital manufacturing platforms overcome these barriers and return to Earth after each mission—not only delivering materials but also capturing insights to refine performance. Each cycle improves precision, efficiency, and reliability, making every subsequent orbital manufacturing run more effective.

JOB SUMMARY

We have an exciting opportunity for an Embedded Software Engineer who will primarily focus on designing, developing, writing, and testing board-level code as well as application code to implement ultra-low-power data acquisition systems, control systems, and data processing systems. This position will work out of our headquarters in the historic Boilermaker Building in Washington, D.C.—a former naval industrial facility where boilers for Navy ships in WWI and WWII were fabricated. The location honors America’s industrial heritage while serving as a hub for advanced, space-based manufacturing in the heart of the nation’s capital.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The immediate primary focus of this position is on developing embedded software code. This includes the development of special application-level utilities for supporting development on deeply embedded systems, and the development of low-level, main-executive, code without the benefit of an operating system. The low-level code will control and interface with flight hardware and other support equipment via I2C, SPI, and memory-mapped interfaces, as well as custom protocols across UART interfaces to collect, store, and disseminate sensor data.
  • The continuing focus of this position is to help architect and implement the overall data collection and analysis subsystems, with growth opportunities to implement more advanced hardware control, monitoring, and telemetry software, as well as advanced data analysis and monitoring software for ground operations.
  • The position is responsible for evaluating the integration of the engineering solution within the overall engineering environment; and ensuring that appropriate documentation, testing, maintenance, and engineering updates are completed.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or PhD in a related technical discipline from an accredited institution or equivalent industry  experience. The level of this position will be commensurate with the background of the candidate hired.
  • Successful candidates will have:
  • A high proficiency in C programming language (and/or C++), in addition to extensive experience with software development in the Linux environment (command line, GCC, Makefiles, shell scripting, etc.).
  • Embedded development experience including cross-compiling to separate targets, and testing/development on highly-embedded systems.
  • Familiarity with use of oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, protocol analyzers, and other lab equipment needed to successfully debug deeply embedded hardware.
  • Familiarity with reading circuit card schematics and wiring diagrams is a plus.
  • Must demonstrate a detailed and extensive technical expertise in embedded programming and proof of the application of engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice.
  • Must have the ability to organize, plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones. Experience in project leadership is a plus.
  • Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required in order to effectively interface with other departments, customers, government representatives, and/or industry professionals.
  • Must be customer-focused and able to work on a self-initiated basis and in a team environment.
  • The ability to work extended hours is required, as is the ability to travel if necessary.
  • A security clearance, or the ability to obtain one, is required.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Base salary will vary depending on job-related knowledge, education, skills, experience, business needs, and market demand. Salary is just one component of our comprehensive compensation package. Full-time employees also receive company equity, as well as access to a full suite of compelling benefits and perks, including: comprehensive medical, vision, and dental coverage, and generous paid time off.

ITAR REQUIREMENTS

To conform with the U.S. Government export regulations, applicant must be a (i) U.S. citizen or national, (ii) U.S. lawful, permanent resident (aka green card holder), (iii) Refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or (iv) Asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158, or be eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
