About The Role
As an Embedded & Controls Engineer at Newlight, you will play a pivotal role in developing the intelligent control systems that enable our hydrogen-diesel hybrid propulsion technology. You'll work with cutting-edge ECU systems, real-time control algorithms, and embedded software to optimize hydrogen injection for maximum efficiency and performance.

Key Responsibilities

Design and develop advanced control algorithms for hydrogen injection systems in maritime diesel engines

Develop and program ECU (Engine Control Unit) software for real-time fuel optimization

Write low-level C code for bare-metal and RTOS-based embedded systems with focus on performance and reliability

Implement embedded software for microcontrollers and real-time operating systems (RTOS)

Integrate sensor systems and develop data acquisition protocols for engine monitoring

Conduct system testing, validation, and optimization in laboratory and field environments

Collaborate with mechanical and combustion engineers to optimize overall system performance

Develop safety protocols and fail-safe mechanisms for hydrogen injection systems
Required Qualifications
-
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Control Systems, or related field

5+ years of experience in embedded systems development and control systems engineering
-
Strong proficiency in low-level C programming for embedded systems (bare-metal and RTOS)

Expertise in microcontroller programming, interrupt handling, peripheral interfaces (SPI, I2C, UART, CAN), and hardware abstraction layers

Experience with memory management, DMA, timers, and real-time constraints in resource-constrained environments

Experience with ECU development, automotive/industrial control systems, or engine management systems

Knowledge of control theory, PID controllers, and adaptive control strategies

Familiarity with communication protocols (CAN, Modbus, Ethernet) for industrial systems

Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced startup environment
Preferred Qualifications
-
Experience with marine or heavy-duty diesel engines
-
Knowledge of hydrogen fuel systems, alternative fuels, or fuel injection technologies

Experience with debugging tools (JTAG, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers) and low-level optimization techniques

Background in automotive, aerospace, or industrial automation industries

Familiarity with functional safety standards (ISO 26262, IEC 61508)
