Electronics Engineer — Downhole Tool Development
Greenwell Engineering | Weatherford, TX | Full Time | Onsite
ABOUT GREENWELL ENGINEERING
Greenwell Engineering designs, manufactures, and repairs wireline logging tools built for the independent wireline service market. We build tools that work in the field, get repaired fast, and don't require a major service company relationship to support. Small team, real ownership, direct impact.
ABOUT THE ROLE
We're looking for an Electronics Engineer to take full ownership of our tool electrical development — from schematic through layout, bring-up, debug, and field support. You'll be the primary electrical engineering resource on a multidisciplinary team spanning mechanical, firmware, surface systems acquisition, operations, and beyond.
This role is built on a strong foundation of institutional knowledge developed by highly regarded veterans of this industry who will be part of your onboarding. You're not starting from scratch — you're stepping into proven designs, real field history, and individuals invested in handing it off properly. From that foundation, you'll be expected to lead the electrical engineering contribution to systematic process improvements across how we design, validate, and iterate on tools.
In this environment, problems don't always present themselves neatly. A Warrior acquisition issue might trace back to a hardware change. A firmware behavior might be a circuit problem in disguise. The right candidate speaks fluently across the hardware, firmware, and acquisition boundary — and is comfortable working across all three to find the answer.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
-
Own PCB design end-to-end — schematic capture, component selection, layout review, and release
-
Design and validate electronics for high-temperature (150°C+), high-shock, high-vibration downhole environments
-
Collaborate closely with the firmware engineer and Warrior specialist on tool integration, interface design, and cross-discipline problem solving
-
Lead the electrical engineering portion of ongoing process improvement initiatives — better workflows, better documentation standards, better design practices
-
Support hardware bring-up, board-level debug, and field failure analysis
-
Work directly with mechanical engineering on form factor constraints — our tools live in tight cylindrical housings
-
Support tool repair operations with root cause analysis and design improvements
-
Contribute to EDA toolset evaluation as the engineering team evolves — your experience and preference will carry weight
-
Document design decisions, component rationale, and test results with the thoroughness a small team depends on
-
Leverage AI tools actively as part of your workflow — for simulation support, documentation, failure analysis, and design iteration
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
-
3-7+ years of experience in electronics or electrical engineering
-
Hands-on PCB design experience — schematic and layout, not just oversight
-
Experience designing for harsh environments — downhole, subsea, aerospace, or similar
-
Proficiency in at least one professional EDA platform (PCAD, Eagle, or Altium)
-
Comfortable working across the hardware/firmware/acquisition boundary — not just owning your lane
-
Strong instincts for what fails in the field and why
-
Actively uses AI tools as part of engineering work — and understands their current limits as well as their value
BONUS
-
Wireline or MWD/LWD background
-
Familiarity with Warrior acquisition systems
-
Familiarity with cylindrical form factor PCB constraints
-
Experience contributing to process improvement in a small engineering team
