Job Summary
Since 2016, Salas OโBrien has been working on the largest mobile robotic system in the world alongside world-class roboticists at National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC) of Carnegie Mellon University. Sponsored by the marine industry of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as their moonshot project, the Concrete Mat Laying Robotic System will preserve the course of Mississippi River, thereby saving the surrounding cities and infrastructure from disastrous flooding and erosion.
Salas OโBrien is hiring a Robotics Software Engineer to join our tight-knit team to bring this mechanical marvel to life. Since completing the fourth phase of prototyping was completed in 2020, the team has focused on the final, full-scale water-based system.
The Robotics Software Engineer must be passionate about doing what has never been done before as they test, implement, and maintain software for robotic control and automation of the Mat Laying Robotic System. Through their efforts of troubleshooting system problems and engineering unique solutions, they will contribute to a truly novel robot with a powerful purpose.

The job will be based in Pittsburgh, PA with travel to test onsite at a shipyard in Louisiana. Moderate travel is anticipated for this job.
Duties And Responsibilities
-
Develop and execute extensive testing, verification, and validation on both the existing land-based prototype and the upcoming full-scale final system.

Maintain and support software modules to run on safety-critical industrial automation systems.

Analyze software to diagnose and resolve software problems, coordinate installation of software systems, and develop and direct software system testing procedures, programming, and documentation.

Work within Scrum/Agile development team sprints with deliverables and demonstration of results.

Debug and determine root causes for customer issues in the field and clearly communicate resolutions and workarounds to both customers and the internal team.
Qualifications
-
Bachelorโs Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or a related area
-
1-3 years of related experience
-
Software engineering and programing background, with experience developing on teams, keeping on schedule, and production-level testing

Professional experience with C++, testing, and debugging
-
Previous experience with algorithm development

Desire to learn on-the-job to further develop these skills.

United States citizenship
Desired Qualifications

Experience in a Linux environment and scripting languages

Familiarization or previous experience with robotic sensors or perception

Experience with Docker, Softing/OPCUA, networking, or databases is a plus

The expected base salary range for this role is $100-120K USD per year. Actual compensation will be determined based on a number of factors including skills, experience, qualifications, and location.
