Navantia Australia, in partnership with University Technology (UTS) Sydney have create a new arm to what they do: Marintec. Marintec aims to nurture Australiaโ€™s sovereign capability in the maritime sector through cutting edge research and development in digital technologies.

We have exciting opportunities for a Research and Development (R&D) Engineer to join the team out of its UTS campus office, Sydney. In the role, one supports the design, development, and integration of innovative engineering solutions to enhance platform systems and related naval technologies. The role supports the development of infrastructure and frameworks for the smart sustainment of naval platforms

Your Responsibilities Will Include

  • Control Systems Engineering Expertise: You will lead the digital twin project for propulsion and power plant systems. This involves delivering technical support for the installation, configuration, testing, and validation of control systems and associated software. Additionally, you present and demonstrate new technologies integrated with the control systems to stakeholders as required.
  • R&D Projects Support: You engage in cross-functional collaboration with ongoing research initiatives at Navantia Australia, Marintec, and other relevant research activities within the Innovation and R&D team.
  • Liaise with External Partners: You coordinate with our parent company, Navantia Spain for technology transfer initiatives, particularly in areas of modelling and simulation, control algorithms, optimization, and AI. You ensure the effective integration of transferred technologies into R&D projects.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: You gather design inputs and manage stakeholder requirements to ensure the development of solutions that align with customer needs and expectations. You also communicate progress and developments to stakeholders, ensuring alignment with project goals.
  • Supervision and Mentorship: You supervise and provide guidance to R&D graduates and interns, helping them develop the skills required to contribute to ongoing projects and initiatives.
  • Technological Awareness: You remain informed of advancements in modelling and simulation, control algorithms, optimization, and AI. You undertake research to effectively integrate these technologies into R&D projects.

As The Ideal Candidate, You Will Have

  • Technical Expertise in Engineering: Skilled in the principles and application of digital twins for propulsion and power plants. Strong grasp of the physics and mathematics underlying components, supporting the modelling for digital twin.
  • Modelling and Simulation: Ability to develop accurate models of electrical systems, with experience in tools such as MATLAB/Simulink. Experienced with real-time simulation and advanced data analysis through scripting languages such as Python, enabling predictive and prescriptive analytics to optimize system performance.
  • Analytical Skills and Problem-Solving: Strong analytical skills to diagnose system issues and identify innovative solutions. Proven ability to conduct detailed engineering analyses, perform root cause investigations, and develop solutions that improve system resilience and mission readiness.
  • Research and Development Aptitude: Demonstrated research capabilities, with a focus on integrating advanced technologies and methodologies such as Digital Twin, AI, optimization, and control algorithms within naval engineering contexts.
  • Collaborative Experience: Ability to work within cross-functional teams and with academic and industry partners. Experience collaborating on R&D initiatives and supporting knowledge transfer efforts with external stakeholders.
  • Stakeholder Engagement and Communication: Skilled in presenting complex technical concepts to diverse audiences, including stakeholders and team members. Proficient in delivering technical demonstrations and collaborating on project deliverables aligned with stakeholder needs and objectives.
  • Experience in Defence Maritime Domain: Demonstrated experience working in Defence Maritime domain, with a deep understanding of the operational and sustainment requirements for naval engineering platforms.
  • R&D Project Experience: Previous involvement in R&D projects, contributing engineering expertise from project initiation through development, testing, and finalization.
  • ICT and Cybersecurity Awareness: Sound knowledge of ICT operations and an understanding of cybersecurity threats and risk management, particularly in the context of control systems and Defencerelated technologies.
  • Supervision and Mentorship: Experience supervising and mentoring early-career professionals in related engineering fields, fostering knowledge transfer and skill development.
  • Australian Citizenship is required for this position.
  • PhD Degree qualified or undertaking is preferred for this position, ideally in model predictive control or digital twin technology for complex engineering systems.
