About the Role:
We are seeking a Principal Firmware Engineer for a critical role within Avive’s R&D organization. This role is a player-coach that will develop and lead new embedded firmware systems from early design stages through production releases, maintenance, optimizations, and expansions. This position will architect, code, modify, debug, and optimize embedded firmware of life-saving medical products.
What You'll Do:
- Serve as a technical leader for medical device firmware development and team of engineers
- Design, code, unit test, and debug applications in various software languages including C and C++ embedded programming for bare metal and/or RTOS
- Integrate firmware with embedded systems. Work with microcontrollers (e.g. ARM, PIC32), digital signal processors, and peripheral communication over SPI, I2C, UART, I2S, Single Wire Interfaces, I/O, and USB
- Experience working with wireless communication technologies including BLE, Wi-Fi, GNSS, and Cellular communication
- Experience reading electrical schematics, using basic EE laboratory equipment (e.g. oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, power supplies), and system debugging of electronics hardware and firmware systems
- Conduct code reviews, apply metrics for code quality, use secure coding standards, and participate in software verification activities
- Demonstrate solid understanding application of UML, Systems Thinking and state of the art software development practices
- Deliver design documentation, flowcharts, diagrams, code comments and clear testable code
- Recommend, solicit, and provision COTS software through company approved supplier management
- Assist in software verification and quality assurance procedure development
- Extensive experience working with Git and Jira
- Extensive experience in PCB board bring-up and use of basic EE laboratory equipment

Experience in an FDA regulated environment applying IEC 62304
- BS degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics or equivalent combination of relevant coursework and job-related experience.

15+ years of experience including a minimum of 5 years with medical devices
- Proven work experience in firmware engineering using C and/or C++
- Experience with Bare Metal, RTOS, and Linux operating systems
- Experience with Python or other scripting languages
- Experience with at least one of the following technologies: ARM, PIC32, or DSP
- Familiarity with Cybersecurity concepts, fundamentals, and associated coding practices
- Experience with test-driven development, Agile with Scrum

What we're looking for
At embedd.it, we power hardware-software integration in embedded devices. We turn fragmented semiconductor chip data into configurable digital twins, then deterministically generate code, tests, and documentation – making integration faster, cheaper, and resilient to supply chain shocks.
We’re looking for a true legend – someone with abstract thinking and deep expertise in low-level software development. You’ll build vendor-agnostic tooling for MCU and peripheral integration to solve hardware-software integration once and for all. We work at the intersection of embedded systems, code generation, compilers, and machine learning. It’s your chance to help redefine how low-level development is done.
Responsibilities
- Drive the architecture of the driver structures and system layout
- Define scalable patterns for cross-architectural integration across bare-metal, Zephyr, Linux, and other environments
- Deconstruct complex SoC device trees and translate hardware descriptions into structured internal models for automated reasoning
- Partner with the ML team to shape data and annotation models for AI-driven data-extraction tooling
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in embedded systems development, including bare-metal and RTOS-based systems
- Proficiency in C/C++
- Familiarity with firmware configuration, SoC bring-up, and system-level debugging
- Hands-on experience with code generation tools, or low-level compiler/decompiler/emulator technologies
- Strong background in embedded toolchains: compilers, linkers, debuggers, and build systems
- Python or scripting for automation and tooling is a plus
- Experience with functional-safety standards is a plus
