HRL Laboratories, LLC is seeking a PCB Layout Deign Engineer. The Mixed Signal Solutions department at HRL Laboratories is an integrated team of scientists and engineers designing leading-edge mixed signal systems with novel architectures and algorithms, customized integrated circuits, and aggressive packaging and integration techniques. As a member of the team, you will work alongside the hardware team incorporating mixed signal and RF designs into PCBs.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Complete development of CAD layout including symbol creation, floor planning, component placement, constraints management and routing.
- Responsible for the design releases requiring the generation of artwork files, ODB+, fabrication and assembly drawings, and electronic PCB documentation.
- Work with PCB vendors to confirm stack up design and review impedance calculations.
EXPERIENCE DESIRED:
- 5+ years of relevant experience in PCB layout/routing design, stack-up and impedance calculations, high speed routing techniques.
- Proficient with Cadence Allegro for board layout and Cadence ORCAD for schematic designs.
- Thorough understanding of the relationship between physical layout and electrical performance, RF performance, and emissions.
KNOWLEDGE DESIRED:
- Background in multilayer PCB manufacturing processes including HDI, standard thru-hole and blind/buried vias and back-drilling.
- Familiarity with rigid, rigid-flex and flex design and manufacturing.
- Knowledge of signal integrity and transmission line concepts (phase matching, crosstalk, insertion/return loss, termination, BGA breakout, fab material selection, etc.).
- Ability to work with cross functional teams.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Proficiency in use of computers, engineering work stations, oral and written communication and willingness to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Ability to work well in a team and independently. Must be sufficiently mobile to work within confined spaces and have both visual and hearing acuity.
EDUCATION DESIRED:
BS in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related scientific discipline.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (e.g. driver’s license special tools or restrictions):
U.S. citizenship is required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance. Active SSBI is a plus.
Compensation:
The base salary range for this full-time position is 120,715-150,895 + bonus + benefits.
Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
Senior Embedded Software Engineer

We’re looking for a true legend – someone with abstract thinking and deep expertise in low-level software development. You’ll build vendor-agnostic tooling for MCU and peripheral integration to solve hardware-software integration once and for all. We work at the intersection of embedded systems, code generation, compilers, and machine learning. It’s your chance to help redefine how low-level development is done.
Responsibilities
- Drive the architecture of the driver structures and system layout
- Define scalable patterns for cross-architectural integration across bare-metal, Zephyr, Linux, and other environments
- Deconstruct complex SoC device trees and translate hardware descriptions into structured internal models for automated reasoning
- Partner with the ML team to shape data and annotation models for AI-driven data-extraction tooling
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in embedded systems development, including bare-metal and RTOS-based systems
- Proficiency in C/C++
- Familiarity with firmware configuration, SoC bring-up, and system-level debugging
- Hands-on experience with code generation tools, or low-level compiler/decompiler/emulator technologies
- Strong background in embedded toolchains: compilers, linkers, debuggers, and build systems
- Python or scripting for automation and tooling is a plus
- Experience with functional-safety standards is a plus
