We are seeking a Hardware Development Engineer II to join our Power Electronics team. In this role, you will be a significant and autonomous contributor, solving difficult hardware engineering problems related to high-power electronics systems. You will design, develop, and validate power electronics boards from concept through production, working on 10KW+ high-voltage DC systems that push the boundaries of performance, reliability, and efficiency.
This position requires an engineer who demonstrates strong technical depth in power electronics while also exhibiting the system-level thinking and influence characteristic of our most impactful contributors.
Key job responsibilities
• Design, develop, and test multi-layer power electronics board layouts for high-voltage DC systems (10KW+), from initial concept through volume production release.
• Define and execute power electronics component architecture, including topology selection, component specification, and thermal management strategies.
• Lead the development of test plans that validate designs against DO-160 and DO-274 standards, ensuring electromagnetic compatibility, environmental resilience, and functional safety.
• Ensure designs meet appropriate IP (Ingress Protection) ratings for target deployment environments.
• Apply system-level thinking to understand how power electronics subsystems integrate with and influence the broader product architecture.
• Partner effectively with cross-functional peers, suppliers, and contract manufacturers to build and validate designs, driving alignment on technical trade-offs.
• Deliver accurate time-based estimates for engineering tasks and manage design milestones through the product development lifecycle.
• Create and maintain high-quality design documentation including schematics, specifications, analysis reports, and test results.
• Contribute to design reviews, providing constructive technical feedback to teammates and cross-functional partners.
• Identify risks and defects early in the design phase and proactively propose solutions that balance performance, cost, and schedule.
• Improve team processes, tools, and methodologies; develop firmware, software, or scripts that aid development or testing of power electronics hardware.
A day in the life
You independently drive the design and delivery of power electronics hardware, making sound trade-offs between performance, cost, manufacturability, and schedule. Your test plans thoroughly validate designs and efficiently address system integration challenges. You think in terms of the system, not just individual components, and proactively work to improve the overall product architecture. Your work is consistently high quality, meeting safety, regulatory, and reliability standards. You influence your team's technical direction and are recognized as a go-to resource for power electronics expertise.
About the team
The New Experimental Technology (NEXT) Electric Propulsion Subsystem (EPS) organization conducts technology research, design and development of the power system for Prime Air’s drones. We are responsible to deliver an EPS and hardware components that safely supports 15-minute drone delivery and is certifiable by the FAA and EASA regulators.
Our work spans the full product lifecycle, from early-stage research and concept development through detailed design, prototyping, testing, and certification support. The EPS is a critical system enabling Prime Air’s autonomous delivery operations, providing the electrical power generation, storage, distribution, and propulsion capabilities required for safe and reliable flight.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or equivalent
- 4+ years of hands-on experience with multi-layer power electronics PCB layout and design.
- 4+ years of experience working on high-voltage DC power systems rated at 10KW or above.
- Demonstrated experience developing power electronics boards from concept through production.
- Proficiency with power electronics design tools (e.g., Altium, OrCAD, ECAD tools, MATLAB/Simulink for power system modeling).
- Working knowledge of DO-160 and DO-274 design and test standards.
- Understanding of IP (Ingress Protection) rating requirements and design-for-environment principles
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree or Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
- Experience leading vendor engagements and manufacturing partner discussions for power electronics assemblies.
- Familiarity with thermal simulation, power integrity analysis, and high-voltage creepage/clearance design rules.
- Experience with rapid prototyping techniques and low-volume manufacturing of power electronics hardware.
- Track record of delivering stable, performant hardware solutions that meet cost and quality targets.
- Ability to decompose complex power system challenges into well-defined component-level design tasks.
- Experience with reliability testing, HALT/HASS, and failure analysis of power electronics systems.
- Demonstrated ability to influence technical decisions across teams and communicate complex trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.
- Contributions to intellectual property (patents, trade secrets) in the power electronics domain.
